I think I finally understand the Big Muff.

Re: I think I finally understand the Big Muff.

The beauty of the Muff is it's simplicity. The tone stack is two caps and two resistors

that's what kills me about the pedal, if i ever pick one up again i'm gonna have it bristling with switches so i can have loads of options.. and call it the tweak muff :D

the only thing i didnt like was the fact that the pedal casing is the size of a small encyclopedia, but the circuit board's the size of a matchbox.. it's like two boss pedals side by side!

Actually, no. With the exception of the early Russian Muffs, recent Muffs pale in comparison to vintage ones.

I'm going to dissagree with that.

I've owned two 70s version 2 (Rams Head), an 80s version 3, a couple of RI, the new Little Big Muff, and now a new Russian.... not to mention the numerous other ones I've played through. I can honestly say that every Muff is different and that the vintage Muffs are just as inconsistently good or bad as the current crop. I can also honestly say that the new Little Big Muff sounded better than my mid 70s version 2, which is why I sold it to a friend of mine.... who also eventually replaced it with a LBM (and later with a Da MoaF). Lastly, this new Russian Muff I bought sounds way different than any of the other Muffs I've used before.... more like a distortion and less like a fuzz, and despite it being totally opposite to vintage it's also the one I like the best... primarily because you can actually palm mute with the thing.

You know, I will agree with you. I somehow totally forgot about the LBM, and I've yet to play it. I just immediately thought of the NYC Reissue which for me does fall short of the vintage Muffs.

Tga black Russian Muff is a cool alternative to a "distortion" box, it does sound quite a bit different than the typical Muff.

How do yo ulike Da MoaF? How does it compare to some of the other clones?

Very true. Although it definatly sounds like a Muff, it also manages to not sound anything like a USA RI.

Haven't tried one yet. I haven't managed to borrow my friends yet (moved last year, so we now live about 2500km apart) and I keep putting off buying one. His description is that it sounds similar to Big Muff, but it can palm mute. I'd eventually like to get it and a Skreddy Mayo.... $$$$ being the current limiting factor.

Re: I think I finally understand the Big Muff.

Cool, I'll look forward to seeing your impressions when you get it.

I hear you on the Skreddys man. I've been scoping out ebay and ended up with a Zero and an Ernie. And for some sick reason I want a Mayo and a Pink Flesh still! ;)

Re: I think I finally understand the Big Muff.

so if you are more of a fuzz fan than distortion a little big muff or NYC RI is a better choice then the Russian? I've been considering getting a muff for a while, but i haven't tried one through my amp yet.

Re: I think I finally understand the Big Muff.

I'd try all three in the store if you can. Personally, I think the new LBM sounds better than the USA RI, but not everyone agrees with my tastes so....

Re: I think I finally understand the Big Muff.

i'll have to see if Dave is ordering more EH pedals any time soon. I know we are technically a dealer, but he hasn't had a muff in the shop for a while.
