I think I found my new amp!!

I have been doing some research you know, listening to clips, reading reviews, that sorta stuff. What do you guys think of the ENGL series? I've been digging up alot on these amps and all I can say is WOW! I really want the ENGL Powerball, although cheap compared to other BIG name models, it's still a little out of my price range at the moment so... What do you guys think about the ENGL Fireball? It seems to have way more then enough punch with a little less wattage for the neighbor's sake. Not as many cool features but about $800 bucks cheaper. Any experiences with the Fireball or should I try to save up (notice I said try) and get the Powerball?

Engls get lotsa love from me!

Do a google search for the "unoffical Engl Forum". Its much like this one just a little slower.

Re: I think I found my new amp!!

i think the powerball is a good amp. versatile and
robust. afaik it sounds strange with emgs, but if
you stay away from that, you'd be happy.
i am an engl fan myself. as a more purist guy, i like the
fireball a bite more.

The Fireball is great for metal rhythm, really tight & you don't need that much gain (too much gain makes it sound uber-compressed).

I'm not too fond of the cleans or lead tone ability though.

But i'd definately have it as a death metal rhythm amp.

The Powerball sounds weak in comparison but unlike the Fireball, it has more than 1 channel.

If you have ****loads then the Invader or Special Edition will be great for ya.

Re: I think I found my new amp!!

I used to have a Screamer 50 combo and a Thunder head that I used with various cabs. They worked out great, had a good bright sound to them. Good overall amp for the money. The only problem I ever had in two years was with the reverb.

I use Koch amps for that kind of thing now. They don't sound quite as modern as Engl, but I like the headroom and crunch I get with the Twintone II. Not that I'm trying to push my brands or anything but you could check it out before committing to Engl. The Multitone is even better if you can afford it.

Re: I think I found my new amp!!

I liked the sound of the screamer clean, and verb, but it sounds like the fireball has a fatter bottom end and crunch. I dunno, I'll do some more research and see if I get some more replies. I have a hunch that several more ppl on here own or have played through some Engl's. I wish the fireball had reverb though!

Re: I think I found my new amp!!

No experience with ENGL, other than the people that own them seem to love them. Regarding gear, I've benn disappointed when I buy gear that's a step down from what I want, but I've never been disappointed from gear I stretch or save longer to afford. Back in '05 it was time for a new amp, I really loved the Road King, but man was it pricey. I saved, and eventually went in and it happened to be on clearance for 4th of July. Now I own the amp I really wanted instead of one of the substitutes I was looking at.

Keep saving and try to play the entire ENGL line. When you find the one that speaks to you, save up until yo can afford that one.

That actually makes really good sense. I have liked what I heard from the Fireball & the Powerball. I'm going to play both for sure before I make a final decision. One of the earlier post's said the Powerball sounded a little weaker so that might be a big negative for me because I don't want weaker if you know what I mean. I play alot of different styles but metal is the sound I'm after right now. Deep heavy crunch with a nice attack! Thnx for the replies so far guys! Keep em' coming! :headbang:
