Ask Zakk, Marty Friedman, Dave Mustaine, Randy Rhoads (if you could!) among others. Not essential, im not fully a shredder or anything, but i havent felt the need for one so far. I like the simplicity Some like them, some don't

The whammy bar is nice for beginning or intermediate shredders, to cover up some of the mess during solos when they run out of notes.

At least, that's what I use mine for.

You should have at least one guitar with one. I think everyone should. Sometimes it's fun to beat the s*** out of the thing. If you want to "shred" you're going to learn tapping, arpeggios, exotic scales etc right? Why deny yourself part of the arsenal. It's another trick for the bag. If you don't think you like it sell the guitar later. Especially with the speedloaders coming out now.
