I think I'm going to commit Kramer Sacriledge!

Mr 9finger

Digitally Challenged
I have a freshly painted Kramer Pacer Custom II body in bound and due sometime this week. Since it's almost tax refund time, I should be able to finish it off rather quickly!

Anyway, I think I think I'm going to stray from my norm of usual pickup choices and do something a little different. Since the body is H/S/S layout w/ a standard strat wiring scheme and hole pre drilled for a mini toggle, I think I'm going to go EMG.

Normally I hate EMG's or any other active pickup for that matter. But I've been listening to the Floyd live album Pulse and w/ some older Metallica and Ozzy in the mix and I've really been getting off on some of the tones I'm hearing. So this might be a worth while venture.

I'm thinking of getting the new 81TW and an SA for the middle and neck. Along w/ the EXG and SPC controls Gilmour uses on his EMG loaded strats....the red one IIRC. Then using a mini toggle instead of the stock push/pull to coil select on the 81TW.

The only down side is the floating floyd on this guitar. It's rare that I say downside for anything Floyd Rose, but I just don't think I can pull some of the tones out of this guitar w/ the bridge being full floating. So I'll have to install a tremol no in there as well.

Anyone have any other suggestions or comments? Tried the 81TW?

Here's a link on the 81TW if you don't know what it is already,

Good plan. Sounds versatile, though I'd get the blackouts if I were you.

I like the SA's but would drop the 81TW in favor of an 89. The 89 tapped is just a SA so you would have a full set of SA's available. It the full mode it sounds more like a slightly weakened 85 which is much fuller and sweeter sounding than the harsh icepicky 81. If you want the harsher 81TW then go with S's instead of the SA's as they will tonally match better. That set up would be good for 80's hair metal using a big rack with a lot of effects and huge amounts of buzzola but not much else.

If I had my way about it, I'd have a 60a and SA in the same housing. Not much choice in it, but I'm going to look into the new Duncan Active singles as well.

Keep the ideas coming bros! I don't have a lot of exp. w/ EMG's in general!

+1
89 just KILLS the 81 as far as tone is concerned.

Brent, forget the 81 or anything in the 80's, put a 60A in there with the SA's!

The SPC and EXG are a must! Hell, run those with passive pickups too. IMO, I like em more with passives than with actives. If you have a DD equipped axe, run a SPC with it and thank me later!
