I think I'm sick...

I haven't gassed for any pedals for more than a month. I haven't gassed for new guitars in over 6 months. I sold my primary amp last month and got a new one and haven't looked at any other amp since...

I don't even give a crap about any of the things I saw released at NAMM.

Put on your masks on in case this is catching. I hope it's not terminal. :barf:

Just tell yourself your poor and can't afford anything else. Before you know it you'll be gassing to spend some money on something you can't afford.:feedback:

This is something I actually wish I could catch.... haha

This is my affliction

Re: I think I'm sick...

I do have to say I saw less stuff at NAMM this year that was exciting than most years. At least from the videos and press releases, not a whole lot grabbed me.

Re: I think I'm sick...

My gear would be considered at least semi-pro to professional level, and any famous guitar player could easily grab one of my guitars, an amp and a few pedals and easily sound amazing. Knowing that it’s all on me to sound better makes my GAS far less than it was when I had an Epi LP, Zoom 505 and Peavey Rage.

There are pedals, amps, guitars and pickups I’d like to try, but I know they will be shades of what I currently have, not a revolutionary change. For example I had to try the D&M Drive and the Mad Professor Royal Blue, and I’m glad that I did. But I really should decide if they are going to stay in place of something else.

In fact I’ve started to thin the pedal collection and plan on doing it for the guitars and maybe an amp in the near future.

iI wish I had whatever it takes to do that. I am attached to my pedals ... even the ones I haven't used in years. To some extent it's because I know my preferences change and I may find a new attraction to one that may have lost it's place on the board years ago. Mostly, though, I think it's because I can't stand selling them for so much less than I paid for them. I don't dislike any that bad.

Having said that, I will definitely thin out the board when I settle on a better amp.

To put it in perspective, since I started buying pedals in 1996 I had sold none and only traded two. The redundancy is out of hand. How many Overdrives, Fuzzes and Delays does one person need? When I use 25% of my pedals regularly and never use the other 75% it’s not that difficult. Also, I can justify that if I sell these I can get another pedal or two.

Re: I think I'm sick...

Cured. Gassing for a Traynor Small Block 500 watt bass Micro head and the matching 1x15 cab to go with my 4x10 in my bass rig.

Also gassing for various microphones and contemplating acoustic treatment for my music room.

Re: I think I'm sick...

I'm in a horrible position:
I have a choice of decent instruments to play upon.
I have a choice of decent amps to play through.
I have a decent way to record it all.
Now, I have to do something worth listening to, (to me, of course) with it all.

Re: I think I'm sick...

Still, go buy a crappy pedal. Maybe two.

There’s a lot to be said for a crappy pedal or two. You find yourself having fun with them and wondering, “Well what could I do with this or that other piece of gear? What could I make a handwired tube anniversary Smash Box sound like? What’s the deal with the DOD Edge? And is this my time to try thumb picks?”

Re: I think I'm sick...

Right now I'm going through my existing dirt pedals and trying to figure out which ones I like best with my latest amp.

OD's all sound great! Especially when pushing the dirty channel. The problem is figuring out which one sounds best.

Certain distortions and fuzzes that sounded wonderfully huge on my old amp sound weak and thin in the Traynor's clean channel. Luckily the dirty channel on the amp sounds really nice and I don't really need pedals, but I'm hoping to find some options for when I want a different sound.

Who knows, if none of my existing fuzz and distortions sound decent with this amp, I may be looking for options.

How's about buying an inexpensive pedal, that's not crappy?
I picked up my TS-7 at a yard sale for $20. Inexpensive but definitely not crappy.

Re: I think I'm sick...

Speaking of pedals, I'm getting a TrueTone Route 66. Not cheap, but most pedals with comparable features cost a lot more.

I went to my local Long & McQuade on Saturday looking for it and even though the inventory said they had one in stock, they didn't. It's on order and I'm snapping it up when it comes in.

Primary plan is to use it with my bass rig, but might try it on guitar too.

Re: I think I'm sick...

...Man, I just don't care about pedals. I never felt I sounded any better with time-based effects; flange, chorus, delay etc. are mostly lost on me, maybe a hint of reverb is fine? That's not a pedal for me anyway. The one pedal I really need is my Fulldrive 2 Mosfet, and only really because I can't always crank my amps, and it makes a cranked preamp at low volume sound a lot better/fuller. I've gone through a lot of Distortion pedals, but never really landed on one I want to use more than a cranked amp (even a cranked preamp, with or without drive added.)

That said I got obsessed with Devi Ever pedals at one point, but there's not much I can actually do with them; they mostly stuck around in the boxes after the novelty value wore off, and I just don't actually feel fuzz is such a useful tone for me any more. I still have around a half a dozen I keep meaning to sell...

Agreed, but for a different reason. Once I realized I could get professional quality effects from a MIDI-based rack unit, I never looked back. With one exception, pedal's really don't do anything for me. That exception is the Boss Dimension C. I am still looking for a way to replicate that sound with proper headroom. For everything else I can use my G-System.

Re: I think I'm sick...

Actually, there is a second exception: there are very few good overdrives in anything but pedal form.
