Les Paul = hammer
Strat = screwdriver
Tele = wrench

In my experience, you need a complete toolkit to get work and stay employed.

The feel of the Strat is why I kept the basic platform and added on things like a FR, custom pickguard and full hums. Led me to stick with the super Strat style for all these years.

The MIJ are still floating around the $200~$300 range on Ebay. I think it is a lot of bang for your buck.

I know a family that beat each other up every other day. IMO, I love strat shapes. That's why I stick to superstrats: they're the best of both worlds... or a very good midpoint.

So bow many consider a tele a different beast entirely? I saw the tool reference up there.

Totally different vibe IMO. My Tele's are both setup with high output humbuckers in the bridge (Hot Rails and a Super Distortion) so I think of mine as sonic sledgehammers. I think beast is a fair description of my Telecasters.

i consider teles different from strats.

Also I was just ribbing Lee over the whole "I can't get along with humbuckers thing". You can totally have single coils that are ballsy. I will allow it.

In some ways a Tele is. It does its thing, which only it can do.

Of course - a hard tail Strat has some of the Tele qualities.

  • The middle position twang of a Tele doesn't exist on a Strat.
  • The 2-4 quack on 5-way Strats doesn't exist on a Tele.
  • The Tele bridge pickup is a different design from a Strat and sounds meatier, borders into mini-humbucker territory.
  • The middle pickup sound of a Strat doesn't exist on a Tele.
  • The pickup design of Teles makes it much less susceptible to noise interference, whereas a stock Strat is an absolute buzz monkey.
  • These days, with the ridiculously overwound stock pickups put in all guitars, the bridge and neck positions sound nearly the same on stock Strats and Teles. However, on properly vintage wound versions of Teles and Strats, the Strat neck has a fatter sound, though a Tele can get close; and conversely the bridge sound on a vintage-wound Strat is weaker than a Tele - but that's not a bad thing, it's very useful for certain styles of music like funk, surf, etc.

In my experience...
  • Stock Teles work well for rock, country and western, blues, rockabilly, motown
  • Stock Strats work well for rock, rhythm and blues, funk, surf/instrumental, pop
...but there are plenty of other kinds of music both are suitable for, and you could easily argue there is more crossover than I stated here.


  • I find a Tele more versatile for gigs where any style could get called and I don't know what's coming.
  • Strats have really let me down when someone calls a tune that is outside the range of music it's good for.
All that said, whether you agree or have different experience, both are indispensable to cover a wide range of modern music.

I've always said the Telecaster is like Fender's Les Paul. Just an absolute beast that can sing and growl like no other.

Dude that Strat is so full of win. From the color right down to the triple pickups. Though a middle humbucker could start a war around. here.

I love the strat style and the way it balances on my body. HHH strats seem most uncommon, yet very cool. At least that one is but the pickup colors are making my OCD go nuts. Must assimilate and make them all the same!!!
