I think I've seen way too many 80's movies..

Re: I think I've seen way too many 80's movies..

The recording sounds suspiciously like somebody trying out a digital synthesizer in a music shop.

The combination of bell attack over string/brass pad is reminiscent of well-known Roland D-50 and KORG M-1 preset patches. I do not think that the recorded instrument is either of those brands.

It's actually a layered sound on a Casio A Series digital piano.. I layered a string pad over a vibes pad, if I remember the settings correctly. But I do want a Roland D-50 because I saw one in the first Alvin and the Chipmunks movie, when Dave was cleaning up the studio after he got all the instruments out of the rain.

G'day, Nathan.

In case you are interested, every sound on "1977 Ghettos, Yeah?" was originally made by you.

I could furnish a list of what was sampled from where but it might be more interesting for you to attempt to identify the sources yourself.

Well, I indefinitely identified most of the sounds.. But I have no idea.. But a Russian synth on the other hand, WANT. And was that you that made that??? I am going to upload it to my soundcloud so people can get a taste of what these vintage instruments (some I no longer own) can do in a real studio application. Interesting use of the Kawai E300's Drum Machine and Arpeggiator for the drums and bass.

The beatbox loop was a couple of exposed bars during which no others sounds appeared. Same goes for most of the keyboard chordal washes, the guitars and your speech. There is no bass instrument on the remix multitrack.

Some of the sounds have undergone effect processing. The beatbox was subjected to Bit Reduction distortion then, further mangled using a third party plug-in for filtering, ring mod and delay. Heard in isolation, the beat loop and artificially-generated textures sound like a Nine Inch Nails backing track.

I have no idea what keyboards produced some of the sounds that you originally used. I slapped on plenty of Chorus to sweeten the pad sounds.

In my opinion, the only thing remotely Russian in the remix is the middle eight Prokofiev Sleigh Ride type segment. Again, some mangling effect or other was applied. Might even be a Rotary Cabinet simulation at a ridiculously high rate.
Well I dig it man.. And I know what keyboards I originally used. The Kawai E-300 Organ was used for the drum machine and arpeggiated lines, while a Casio CT-655 was used for the string sounds, and a Commodore 64 plugged into a mixer was used for the basslines over the arps. You should do another remix of whatever you find on my soundcloud that is usable. I dig the chorus on the pad sounds and the ring modulation. It sounded very Yugoslavian 80's Rock..

Re: I think I've seen way too many 80's movies..

Really? I would have said it was more like Throbbing Gristle.

Holy crap Funkfingers, you made a Nathan remix. That's.... I have no words to describe it. I'll have to make one up. Splorktacular.

Re: I think I've seen way too many 80's movies..

Good luck with that. I've already grabbed the usable bits!

I have no words to describe it.

On my Soundcloud page, I wrote, "No chipmunks were harmed in the making of this motion." :naughty:

Re: I think I've seen way too many 80's movies..

sounds like someone trying out a synth: yes?
could I see part of this be used for opening credits to a B film from the 80's?: Also yes

Re: I think I've seen way too many 80's movies..

Here's an acoustic guitar instrumental mash up. Constructed from snippets of several previously existing Nathan recordings. Both items are available for download. Masochists only.

Probably still needs more work where the 5/4 section turns into 6/4 (or, is it, 12/8?).
