This really works guys! I noticed the difference right away!

I had the graphtecs on my strat. My lower three strings were getting sorta muffled by the graphtecs... They were lacking that snap and ring. Once I put the metal ones back on - I got that brightness back to the wound.

Then I put those 3 saddles on my tele. And my tele tends to get Ice picky sometimes. This solved the problem. Together with the graphite nut on my tele the treble strings are now round and warm sounding. Some brightness got cut off.

So if you don't mind the look, go for it!!

Cool....I wish the made vintage style saddles, I'd have them on my Strat for sure.

That's the very reason I use the Ferraglide saddles . Tone of steel saddles, with the benefits of graphite.

I do what Eric Johnson does on his Strat and use a brass saddle for the high E string only. Seems like the skinny high E often buzzes/rattles against the hard, somewhat rough surfave of a steel saddle and the brass seems to prevent that and thickens up the tone a little. Probably the Graphite saddles do something similar.

By the way, I took Gearjoneser's advice a few months back and instead of buying a Vox AC-30 bought a Matchless SC-30 instead.

Killer suggestion. When I move into my new place that might be the only amp I'll take out of storage and move in with me.

By the way, I took Gearjoneser's advice a few months back and instead of buying a Vox AC-30 bought a Matchless DC-30 instead.

I'll be holding onto to my other amps too...it's just that I'm moving into a much smaller place. I'll probably take the Matchless and maybe a Deluxe Reverb with me. The rest will have to stay in storage for a while...

Lew...Im doing very well, thanks for asking! As for healing, my knee is still a but messed up but it's getting better (a Tweed Fender amp would make me feel a lot better!). Thanks for asking. When will you start moving?

I forget! I think I paid something like $2100 or $2200 initially but when the amp showed up the vinyl was scratched and marred. After a long drawn out battle the seller agreed to a $400 refund. So I think I paid about $1700 or $1800 for it.

It's an SC-30...not a DC-30.

I've owned (or borrowed!) a few boutique amps (Fender Custom Shop, Dr. Z, Wizard...) but the Matchless is the only one I've kept. The Dr. Z was pretty darn good too...until I compared it to my old 50 watt Marshall. Haven't compared the Matchless to it yet...the Marshall needs new filter caps and electrolytic caps. Lew

Glad you're on the mend.

We've sold our home :dance: and the Doctor who bought it is moving in June 6. We've been emptying it out for most of May and putting everything into storage.

I found a cool home in Taos and the seller accepted my offer and then backed out at the last minute just a couple of days ago. :smack: He turned out to be a pretty bad character and after finding out more about him I decided to let the deal go entirely.

So guess what? I found a beautiful 2 BR cabin up around 8600' near the continental divide just outside of Nederland, Colorado and I'm going to spend the summer and fall in the high country. Signed the lease yesterday.

Super nice place with National Forest for the backyard and when you walk about 300 yards into the backyard it opens up and there's James Peak, Rollins Pass, Rogers Pass and many of my favorite hiking spots practically in my backyard.

Rogers Pass is a high mountain pass that the Ute and Arapahoe Indians used for a thousand years or so to cross the mountians and go from Grand Lake to the Plains and hunt for buffalo. The area has alot of history and a great vibe.

I'm going to get settled in and then talk with my friend who's a realtor in Taos (and Jerry Garcia's old girlfriend!) about just building something.

The tele has been ridden down a mountain in hell by Satan himself when he was running away from Jesus! And yes, I did get in a fight with my ex, blocking flying objects with the tele...

Hah, I just saw this thread.....it made my day!

I've always tended to have blinders on, when it comes to gear. I think of tone in the same way a mechanic thinks about racecars.

As for the Graphtechs, I used to play with a pick attack on 11's about as hard as SRV's, and was snapping strings all the time. I put the Graphtechs on and it solved the problem. The only thing was that the wound strings would sound dead a lot faster than with the stock saddles, so I just went with the hybrid approach. It also allows one set to fix two guitars. On my blue and aluminum guard guitar, it actually looks totally appropriate!

When it comes to Matchless...they aren't for everyone, but if you're into edgy clean tones, there's no amp that's better. They'll make single coils sound 10 miles wide.
I'm glad to hear that Lew and Puckboy are ecstatic about their SC-30 and Clubman. It's funny that every Matchless owner on here has a different model! I have a Chieftain 2-12 combo. Recently, I got a Bassman LTD, so I could compare the two side by side. The LTD is a great amp, but the Matchless still has the edge....plus reverb! I'm selling the Bassman for a few hundred more than I paid for it. I think the two amps I have that I'll never sell are the Bogner and Matchless. Those two are the end of the road for me.

I've taken alot of advice from GJ. Some he knows about through p.m.'s and others he doesn't. A recent tip was to put a premium tube like the GT 12AX7-C in V1 and lower priced but still great JJ's in the other preamp slots. I've also done business with his friend Todd @revolutionguitars because of GJ's recommendation. Todd is a great guy who spent alot of time with me on the phone before I made a purchase from him. These tips are some of the reasons why he's the Gear Ho!
