I want a Splawn Quickrod! (But do I really?)

All the youtube clips have this amp as ideal tone for me. Its a modded marshall style with grind and the gear selector gives it different gain structures.

But then I could also get a used JVM410h for half the new price of a Quickrod (or try to find a used QR if one ever shows up.) Unfortunately, the quickrod doesn't retain its resale value so the "smart" choice would be to try to find a used one.

It just seems that the JVM410h is the obvious choice because of availability and greater feature set. But the quickrod always just sounds great, maybe even better than the jvm.

But here is the thing. I play at home in my basement. I can't get super loud and I would be playing it into a load with IRs through monitors most of the time. I've heard the QR needs volume to sound good. Have heard that the jvm sounds good at bedroom levels.

Maybe something like a Fractal with a Splawn model would scratch the itch at a lower volume? idk.

The Spawn is like a sport bike. It would be a total blast, but I probably can't use it to its potential, and if I did, I'd probably end up killing myself.

Like you're thinking!

I have a Streetrod which is my favorite marshall-ish amplifier... Due to its size, it works really well at low volumes.

The effects loop volume works very well as a master volume and of course the crunch tones are ridiculous...

The clean is the most beautiful tone of any of my amps... Sparkling is overused, but it really is a great description.

And then the overdrives cover practically any tone and the foot controller gives you extremely good control over all those tones. Far more versatile than a marshal.

The Quickrod uses the same circuit so the main difference is the wattage...

If I had to do it again, I'd probably stick with the streetrod, but I have to imagine the quick rod would probably be very good with an attenuator.

As far as modeling, in my book, it depends on your purpose. I have never played a model that completely gets all of the gooey goodness of tubes.. in fact that is the primary use of my Streetrod... The fun of listening to all of that great diversity.

On the other hand, in the mix, models do more than you ever need.

So whenever recording or playing at home, the street rod wins. If I'm performing, my less expensive tube amps or one of a modeling rigs will end up making the trip :-)

Can't wait to hear what you do! And keep us posted.
