I won't buy a Dimarzio...

I just found out the whole story of how Dimarzio trademarked double cream humbuckers so no one else can do it. I understand they did it so people would not buy the competitors pickups, but I still think it's lame. It's for this reason, on principal I will not buy their pickups because that's a greedy punk move they did.

But I still really like the sound of the Dimarzio Super Distortion from the clips I heard. What's a Seymour Duncan that sounds like the Dimarzio Super Distortion, because I will buy THAT pickup.

And please don't say the Custom, because I don't think they sound alike.

Don't tell me. You drive a DeLorean?

Fight the good fight, dawg.

Many of us have complained this issue to death bro. and MANY agree 100%. Sadly, if you want a super d, you gotta go with brand D. they do have thier own thing.

Re: I won't buy a Dimarzio...

There isn't a Duncan that sounds like the Super Distortion, or pretty much any other DiMarzio. Each company kinda has its own sound, even though there are many variations in their product lines, there isn't much crossover.

I have guitars with both in them, and one with B&B Lawrence, I use whatever works for me.

Re: I won't buy a Dimarzio...

If a Super Distortion is what you want, then that is what you should buy. There are plenty of companies out there that offer legitimate reasons not to do business with them, DiMarzio is not one of them.

+1. In my role with The Gear Page, I've learned about a number of builders who have done stuff that I find a lot more dodgy than DMZ and double creams. Like any other industry, the MI business has its share of dooshbags. There are a number of brands that I won't touch out of contempt for the people running them but DMZ isn't one of them.

Is the double cream trademark really so much more ridiculous than some of the patents Mesa has gotten over the years?

Make a Custom/Jb hybrid with a ceramic using a cream coil from a zebra of each.

Find an old Ibanez V2 from the early 1980s. It is essentially the exact same pup.

Gotoh also built them as stock pickups for other Manufacturers at the time. My MIJ warlock had two of them.

That said, the whole "boycott" DiMarzio thing is stupid. Buy what you want, and if you won't then don't complain about the choices you have made for yourself.

What's the problem with wanting to refuse promoting or using the products of a company whose business practices you disagree with but you want an identical product?

That's a fair protest IMO. You make a Duncan hybrid out of two zebras and have a comparable tone.

However, it could be counter-productive if those who see and hear you think it's a Dimarzio.

My old Ibanez '70s style Flying Vs had the Gotohs in them. They did sound EXACTLY like Super Distortions. Just great sounding pickups. Mine were black, though.
