I won't buy a Dimarzio...

Re: I won't buy a Dimarzio...

It amazes me how a company can get a Trademark on something Gibson created
Thats pretty slick.................... & Low

That's what I was going to say. That way you're not really giving them any money per se.

You're supporting the value of their products on the used market, though. And that has an economic benefit.

Re: I won't buy a Dimarzio...

Ha. I have a couple of those Gotoh SuperD copies that I haven't even tried yet. What I need to do is get a couple pickup rings that I can slap them in and drill extra holes in (they use 2 on one side) and see what they sound like in my PRS SE.

If you want a SuperD sound, get the SuperD. NOTHING ELSE sounds like it.

Re: I won't buy a Dimarzio...

I play what gives me the sound I want. Usually, that's Duncan.

And, as with the other company I love to hate - Gibson - the used thing is a great way to get what you want and screw them.

I agree though - the whole thing should be challenged to the supreme court. Gibson invented it, and NO ONE associates it with DMZ anymore, except under the guise of "Larry is a ****** for stealing the patent."

So yes, if you are a dooosh, and you sell double cream pickups, you are in fact violating the trademark etc...I suppose Ed Roman might be able to be sued for liable here. But that's about it.

Everyone all rise up at once
BTW has anyone seen any video inside of the Dimarzio factory
maybe there made overseas

It is not a patent, it is a trademark, and DiMarzio successfully lobbied to associate double creme exposed bobbins with their brand.

Like it or not, if you saw double creme humbuckers in the late '70's early '80's, you knew they were DiMarzio.

However in today's market, I see no real benefit to the trademark, but that is up to DiMarzio.

…the used thing is a great way to get what you want and screw them.

Your willingness to buy the same product second-hand just gives people who buy new a way to dump one thing and buy something else -- maybe used, maybe new. Plus, if people see you playing it, it promotes the product and the brand. If people see you playing what they think is that product, it promotes the product and the brand. I don't think Larry is going to lose sleep over it.

Re: I won't buy a Dimarzio...

Buying used isn't nearly as bad as buying new if you find this unethical. The guy you buy the used SuperD from can spend the money on a SD, after all he just sold a DM he didn't like. Or on booze for that matter. I am sure Mr. Trademark DiMarzio isn't overly fond of the used market. I guess we are lucky they don't have a way to suppress the used market like music and game companies try to do.

If someone dislikes DiMarzio that much, he should make sure every pickup in every one of his guitars is from another company and has a logo on it.

That's why if I ever did buy a used Super Distortion as some has suggested, I will tell people it's a Dragonfire or a V2. LOL

Re: I won't buy a Dimarzio...

I just found out the whole story of how Dimarzio trademarked double cream humbuckers so no one else can do it. I understand they did it so people would not buy the competitors pickups, but I still think it's lame. It's for this reason, on principal I will not buy their pickups because that's a greedy punk move they did.

But I still really like the sound of the Dimarzio Super Distortion from the clips I heard. What's a Seymour Duncan that sounds like the Dimarzio Super Distortion, because I will buy THAT pickup.

And please don't say the Custom, because I don't think they sound alike.

Stop with all the drama and just buy a Super Distortion.

Re: I won't buy a Dimarzio...

The Ibanez V2 is a totally different pickup from the V-2. It's dumb that they named two pickups so similarly. I've heard the two confused w/each other many times. V2's are plentiful, cheap, and are a mediocre pickup IMO. V-2's are hard to find, but are an excellent super distortion alternative.

Re: I won't buy a Dimarzio...

I had in my first real guitar a Super D and liked how it sounded. I didn't know much about pickups then. If I did I would probably still have it. When 2 marriages failed I decided to give music a bigger role in my life. I bought a couple cheap guitars and went about learning how to work on them. Started buying SD pickups because a friend had them in his guitar and I liked how it sounded. I now have 15 guitars total of which 9 are actively used gigging. All but 3 of them have SD pickups. My B C Rich Mockingbird came with Rockfield pickups, which I don't really care for the sound of but I don't like the guitar either so it doesn't really matter. I have an old Yamah RGX 321P that I got a Fred Dimarzio form a member here and a Paf Pro off of craigslist both sound ok not too overly impressed with them as it took a lot of thought to get them where they are now. Then there's the beatter guitar, a Austin LP copy with a bolt on neck and plywood body, junk is what some people call it but I spent some time on it with a cheap paint job and pickups out of a another guitar project and ended up with a good sounding guitar. I'm really happy with SD pickups and will buy (new) from them well a supplier of course only, but to boycott another company for business practices is something that doesn't really effect me.

Re: I won't buy a Dimarzio...

Funnily enough I'm selling an old cream Super D so I can buy a black JB or Custom.
