But I feel that diode swaps make a much bigger difference than people think. A 2 minute job can completely alter the character of a distortion pedal yet you rarely hear about people modding their pedals.

I just swapped out the 0.70v MA150 on my Tubescreamer with a FR107 measuring at 0.56v and for such a "subtle" change it really took the pedal into the gain territory I was looking for.

Definitely a lot of potential here for forum posts.
 
It certainly works to make my BOSS ODB-3 less fizzy and thin. I changed some caps and resistors too, I did the diodes last and at the very least it changed the amount of and harshness of the gain. It has LEDs as clipping diodes. They even light up when signal goes through them which makes me think BOSS missed a trick by not releasing a transparent version!
 
I'd reckon a germanium tube screamer could have a pretty cool sound. I may have to try that soon.
