Does anyone have experience with the Ibanez Bob Weir models from the late '70's?? How do they sound/feel. What are they worth?

Somebody is offering me one in trade and I want to get some background before I look at it.

Re: Ibanez Bob Weir model info???

the guy I talked to said the inlay was amazing, so I'm hoping it's the fancier one.

They are very cool and while I am not a Dead fan by any stretch I used to lust for one of those big time!

That body style is based on a Rex Bogue custom-made instrument. Nice.

Re: Ibanez Bob Weir model info???

I've played one. It's a well made, well sounding guitar. It's not my thing, but if it floats your boat...

They are very close to the SG2000 and 3000's they made...rival ANY Gibby!! If it's a deal...I would go for it!

The SG2000/3000 guitars are Yamaha products. That Bob Weir signature model guitar is a late Seventies Ibanez. It belongs in the period between their "lawsuit" replica instruments and the more original Artist and Roadstar stuff.

I've never played one, But I saw one pretty up close. It looks like a fine instrument. Probably worth some $$ to Bob Weir/Deadhead type's. There is a local Dead tribute band here on L.I. http://www.halfstepgd.com/f The Guitarist Scott in this band has one. He's a pretty cool guy, Maybe you could contact him via the bands site, And he might clue you in?

Re: Ibanez Bob Weir model info???

It is basically a dressed up Ibanez Artist. The late 70's, early 80's Artists and Yamaha SG2000's are just as good, if not better than a Gibson of the same period. They are as heavy as a Les Paul with the maple tops and mahogany backs. The neck is either set like a Gibson or a neck thru body. The frets are medium to large and the neck profile is more like a SG than a Les Paul. Fretboards are either ebony or rosewood. A lot of these guitars have fretboard deformation on the body frets.

The link says it has super 70's? I never liked those pickups that much. Some people rave about them but a friend of mine has one and it just doesn't sound great to me...

Re: Ibanez Bob Weir model info???

The 6281 was my first serious guitar after a crappy SG copy. i loved it so far!
Its is heavy, made out of a japanese varity of ash called sen. The neck is meaty like moderate 50ties style LP neck but gets a little too much after 15th fret. Well made stock guitar case. The overall sound was a bit lame in output so i changed to Bill Lawrence pups, which made the whole basic sound more singing. It has a good clean sound, clear and ringing. If you buy one used look for the small key to adjust the tuning machines, it should be included.
I bought it for 500 Euros and sold it for the same price. I would like to know for what they are floating around today! The Original Price list said it was $595 and the US List said $725 in these days. I think the street price would have been some lower.
