IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

Ok. But along the lines of acquiring exact standard E tuning, how long does it take you to get that after you put new strings on and do you do 1 string at a time or take them all off and then restring?

it takes some time that's for sure. I usually block the trem and take all strings off at once. Then tune to pitch, stretch, stretch again, check that the plate is parallel to the body, usually using a flat long thin pencil, play with the trem a little bit, re-tune, lock the pads, and then fine tune. Also make sure your saddles are locked down and not slipping.

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

^^^ it might be a good idea to upgrade to noiseless springs, or do the medical tubing mod.

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

My give the triangle setup a try when i restring it next. I have some work to do on the bridge to get it to sit correctly as well.

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

I had a 580lp that one day decided not to return to pitch properly after a string change..I put a small dab of vasaline on the knife edges/post..this fixed the issue for me..now all my tremolos get this treatment..

What do you mean by "the Knife edges"? Ive never heard of that. Can you explain to give me an idea of where that is. I've had this guitar for a while now, but i have never gotten deep into adjusting this type stuff. Only thing I've done to this thing is change the strings and put Seymours in it lol....I've never had to adjust it until now.

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

^^^ knife edges is those sharp edges (like knives) by which the plate comes in contact with the grooves of the posts. They are located (looking at your photo) below the high E saddle and above the low E saddle.

The medical tubing mod, is just putting some medical tubing inside the trem springs to make them noiseless.

PS
The intonation on your B (and generally in the rest of springs) must be off. Beware of stripped thread in the plate.

You can tell that something is off with my intonation by looking at the saddles?
So you're saying the "knife edge" is where the adjustment screws for the intonation and saddles allen heads are in front right?

He is correct..b saddle looks to far forward..b string must be somewhat flat sounding I would imagine...

Knife edges is on both sides of the tremolo and the post they are connected to is where u adjust the action..intonation screws are on the saddles under the strings..

Setting up a floating bridge is part science..part feel.and in some cases...part compromise..imo

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

I use chapstick instead of Vaseline
not much it will grow life like a petrie dish

any piece of foam tucked under the springs would dampen the chime
I kinda like it
its like a soft chorus in the back ground

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

Im still not comprehending what the chapstick/vaseline does for the knife edge on the trem though.

you have two pieces of metal that are held together with tension.. they rub together and cause friction...Vaseline is a lubricant.. i guess chapstick acts as a lubricant too but never used that

makes things work smoother... and drastically reduces friction which in turn helps out tuning stability
EVERY little bit helps.. all i can say is that floating bridges are very fickle

thats why i said ..part science.. part feel.. add in a few tricks you learn over the years that might work on some guitars.. not on others.. lol

I understand that aspect of it, but do you really need it though? I understand when you bend notes, or use the trem bar, the bridge moves slightly (unless when performing a dove bomb) but even then it only moves a small amount when bending or what not.

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

it helps more on older trems where the knife edges have dulled

but yes
on a brand new, one probably not so much

that is does.. my tremolo in question is from my #1.. a 2001 dk2 so it has a few years of use on it..LOL

now if the OP wants to get his tremolo to behave.. he can buy a tremolo stabilizer device/block the bridge..try the lubrication of the knife edges..and/or try different spring configurations

and lastly.. the bridge probable needs a good setup.. or atleast to confirm that the intonation is good

on a side note.. i had one of my guitars w/ a floating bridge detuned to Eb and i wanted it in E.. so i was talking to my x and walking her through the tedious process of changing tunings on a floating bridge.. actually only took like 20 minutes to get the bridge to "accept" its new tuning.. which i thought was pretty damn good..
