IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

A floating bridge was a child of satan himself. It's like satan and Floyd Rose had a child and Then that said child grew up and had its own child and called it The Edge lol. Takes FOREVER to tune one up correctly.

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

I had to block the bridge at the proper angle
then tune and intonate
then adjust the spring balance

if you do it in proper order
it goes fairly quick

there are tricks..trying to tell ya.. yes.. a floating bridge can be a PITA.. but they arnt really that bad once you know how to work with them

for instance.. i tune up the bridge pretty fast with a fresh set of strings by putting something underneath the bridge to keep it level as possible.. i prefer an eraser.. insert eraser.. tune up to pitch.. remove eraser..check tuning.. fine tune.. you can use anything.. i used to use a rag or shirt too but those rectangular erasers work best imo

i prefer my floating bridged guitars even though i rarely use the arm.. i just like the feel of them...

well of too bed..

Wow. That's a lot to remember. Thanks. I have used my Korg tuner to block the bridge up while I have restrung the guitar and it seemed to help some. Thanks for the info.

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

b saddle looks to far forward..b string must be somewhat flat sounding I would imagine...
It should sound sharp. Moving saddles towards the neck results to sharp sounding last frets.
Also his lower 4 saddles seem exactly at the same position, this looks just wrong.

Setting up a floating bridge is part science..part feel.and in some cases...part compromise..imo
I agree, if someone wants to get it perfect he may end up crazy. However we must note here that Ibanez's bridges, being more complicated than floyds are also harder to set up, harder to find parts, and harder to just replace.

i didnt realize they are more complicated ..since i dont like/play ibanez's,i confess that I have never used them.. thought they where similar to an OFR or 580lp.. so the edge is even more quirky to setup? lol

I don't know man, for me, both my Ibanez's sound very good. About complexity, some/most Ibanez trems have locking studs, offset saddles, radius achieved via stepping vs saddle heights, locking springs, etc... + Ibanez stock springs for me feel less stable (season-wise) than OFR. So I'd say overall they are a little overdone than OFR.
If you add ZPS into the mix, complexity goes up a long way!

DAMN i seriously did not realize they were so "overly" engineered

no guitars with an OFR at atm even though i had one with one before,, its just two 580lp's which i love and a fender licensed by floyd which seems to work on par with the 580's .. now this greatly surprised me.. really thought it was going to suck but it surprised me

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

Well,. needless to say that this ibanez is my LAST guitar with a floating bridge on it....I just bought an Agile A2000 a couple months ago and it came with Grover tuners on it and it stays in perfect tuning.

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

I'll post another pic of my bridge tonight with the isaddles.

My intonation is dead on for 9/42s

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

no.. but the relative position of the saddles should be somewhat close to the same position..atleast i think it should

Ok...when you get a chance, upload that picture if you will where i can have somewhat of a reference when i start the restring in a couple weeks...Might as well work on it while the strings are off.

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

I had a problematic JT580 Floyd Rose copy on a Jackson. Any use of the trem would throw all the strings sharp while staying in tune with each other. It drove me insane trying to figure that out.

What finally fixed it was replacing the bridge. I even used the same springs, claw, nut and studs. The only thing I could think wrong would be the knife edge on the trem itself?

very possible.. i have heard of people filing the knife edges with a file for such a problem

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

here are some pics of the saddles on my tremoloes.. but these are 580lp and fender trem.

would be better if i had a edge III to show you for a better comparison..all my guitars are strung up with 10 -46's and intonation on 2 out of the 3 are spot on.. just got the stagemaster 2 weeks ago and havent changed strings/setup yet.. its close but i think it was a bit off on the 3rd/6th string

Take a look
Thx ead steadily move closer to the nut
Till the d required the bolt move to the next hole

The g moves back a bit
But the b and e are bolted one hole closer

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

DOES ANYONE HAVE TROUBLE KEEPING A FLOYD STYLE (EDGE III) TREMOLO IN TUNE? MINE I CAN TUNE IT TO PERFECT PITCH AND LET IT SIT FOR A WHILE AND ITS OUT OF TUNE AFTER STRINGS HAVE BEEN STRETCHED AND EVERYTHING....ITS USUALLY ALMOST A 1/2 STEP OUT OF TUNE....AND HOW DO YALL CHANGE THE STRINGS ON YALLS AND SET THE BRIDGE

edge 3 trems are better rocks than they are bridges... they are horrendous

Re: IBANEZ EDGE III TREMOLO

GuitarSquirrel, learning how to setup, maintain or even *fix* locking trems (I have gone to the extreme of helicoil-ing my Floyd Rose II's stripped plate threads), will not only make you a better tech, but also you will start looking at fixed bridge guitars like they are a piece of cake to fix.
