Ibanez Joe Satriani or S470

I've posted a few threads recently about Floyd equipped guitars and have narrowed it down to 2. A JS100 and a S470. Either way, I am getting new pick ups for it, so that is not a consideration. What I'm wondering about is the overall playability of each and mostly, the difference in the 2 bridges. The JS has the new edge system, while the 470 has the ZR system. Also, the JS is basswood and has a little more mass to it, while the 470 is mahogany and more contoured, giving it a little less mass. Any input on either guitar, especially the bridge systems, would help a lot. Also, would either inherently have better tone possibilities, based on the wood type, and body mass. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me out.

It just comes down to preference at this point. I like Mahogany, but I don't like how extremely thin the S-series are (I'm an Ibanez FREAK, so this isn't coming from a Gibson purist or anything). If you dig how the thin body feels, I'd say get it, the Mahogany in those guitars sound really rich.
Have you had experience with basswood? I think it's a pretty cool, versatile wood. The lower-end basswood kinda blows though.

The Edge Pro and ZR trems are Ibanez's best trems, in my opinion. The ZR will be a little more stable.

Re: Ibanez Joe Satriani or S470

i don't especially like either of those, but i definitely wouldnt buy a sig guitar like a satriani.

people half-expect you to be an exact clone of him. tone, playing, looks, everything.

the only sigs i would be would be the white zombie J. Yuenger iceman and the steve vai JEM, because both of those ibanezes truly rock. sig strats can be nice as well, such as the jeff beck strat.

if you really want the petrucci model, go for it, dont let anyone sway your decision. get what YOU want.

Re: Ibanez Joe Satriani or S470

And definitely don't be swayed by what others would think of you! Just because you have a Satch guitar doesn't mean you have to play like him. There's nothing wrong with signature guitars, they're still guitars. When you play shows, probably 5 people in the crowd will notice anyway, and it's not like they're going to force you to play "Satch Boogie".

Get whatever the hell feels right; once you confine yourself with ridiculous restrictions like appearance, you'll just be sending yourself right back into the quest for gear.

Re: Ibanez Joe Satriani or S470

Admit it though, it would be cool to bust out some satch with his sig guitar and maybe JSX head. :fing25: :laugh2:

imo, i think sig guitars are a bit overpriced just because they have a name attached. i would still buy one if it was better than whatever else i was looking at. the only real reason i wouldnt is if i didnt like the pickups or the feel or the wood or whatever. i like to customize my guitars, so whats the point of buying an X signature with Y pickups if im just going to switch them out or whatever?

EDIT: wow, i said whatever a lot. whatever.

Bear with my lengthy mini review/ post here..I just went through a time with the S470

I recently purchased a S470DX from SamAsh.com after basically a 10 year hiatus from playing and It had some issues (and I mean this particular guitar).

Ibanez S470DX Bad Points:

1) It has a handful of "dead" spots on the fretboard. When bending, the note frets out almost immediately. The only way to solve the prob was by raising the action ridiculously high. Possibly tall frets.

2) Even after raising the action quite high, it still had some annoying fret buzz. Out of the box, the buzz was real bad over the entire neck. Neck adjustment may have helped but neck relief looked decent to me.

3) Pickups sound pretty bad. Very thin, nasally, and twangy..even the Humbuckers. At times I could get a decent sound, but generally they are as bad as folks say they are.

Ibanez S470DX Good Points

1) Wizard II neck RAWKS! I can really fly all over this neck. The Wiz necks have always been my fave.

2) Fit & finish otherwise was pretty darn good considering the low cost.

3) ZR tremelo is VERY smooth to use, easy to work with, has smooth turning fine tuners, and stayed in tune extremely well under heavy bar use.

4) Although the body is thin (at the edges, it's still thick through the midsection), the guitar has some heft and had decent sustain.

Last weekend I went to Guitar Center to try some new amps, and since they had no S470 DX on the wall, I asked to play a Jackson DK2 dinky (which was the S470DX's main contender when I was looking to buy). I was already miffed about having to return the Ibanez and wait for a replacement, but after playing the Jackson, it was a no brainer: I bought the Jackson on the spot, and the Ibanez is going back (thank god for the 45 day guarantee).

I am in no way condemning Ibanez, as I've had some in the past I really liked, and I'd buy another one if it suited my fancy. My advice though would be to play the actual guitar you are buying before you lay down the cash, or if you buy online at least be prepared to have to send something back if it does not meet your expectations.

Re: Ibanez Joe Satriani or S470

wow.. a wizard II enthusiast... glad to see you saw the light LOL... jackson necks are super comfortable. granted, maybe not as 'fast' as a wizard, but they feel so ****ing GOOD!

if your only choices are those two, wait it out a bit and save more money and buy a better one... if you absolutely have to have an ibanez, try and get a better prestige series.. and remember, ibanez guitars are worth exactly as much as their number implies, not a cent more

Re: Ibanez Joe Satriani or S470

Yup, Prestige is the way to go. The only non-prestige Ibanez's I've known to be good without being Japan made are:
SA (I have one too! ;) )
SZ
SCA <---or something like that
Artcore

Re: Ibanez Joe Satriani or S470

I LOVE those JS1000's and i like them enough to say that they're one of the Best Ibanezes ever made.

These don't scream "SATRIANI" when you play them... somehow people pick these up and expect to be able to sound exactly like Mystical Potato Head Groove thing but they sound much more even and balanced than you'd think they would. they have a nice sound and tend to accentuate the differences in your playing rather. They are geared for high-powered rock and hyper-blues but they're real players. The body is very comfy and the neck is a copy of Joe's personal '58 Strat and it feels great... its a slight compund radius, too. goes from a 9" to a "10 and it's real smooth feeling.

This is probably the only signature model guitar I'd ever buy because like i said it's designed to appeal to a player rather than a fan.

I would never buy a signature series guitar, especially a low-end one.
but Les Pauls were signature models, weren't they?

Yet to meet a Paul player who actually wanted to sound like Paul...
