Ibanez neck pick up

My buddy (the other guitarist in our band) has an Ibanez. I think it's like a ex370 and made out of basswood, not sure though. Right now he has the Petrucci set with the stock single pick up in the middle. He likes the bridge but really wants something more bluesier for the neck. I'm a Gibson guy so I can't really give him any advice. He really wants an alnico 2 and likes the Slash neck. But I don't know if that would work in his guitar as far as the wood goes. Does anyone have any ideas like maybe the Slash or PG etc. Thanks

Re: Ibanez neck pick up

Does he have the 22 or 24 fret version? That also makes a difference.

Re: Ibanez neck pick up

I wouldn't recommend throwing more money at that guitar.

Better to strip out the upgrades, sell, and upgrade to something Japanese

Re: Ibanez neck pick up

Which Petrucci set does he have?

I like both the Air Norton and Liquifire for bluesy neck sounds, especially if you roll off the tone a bit. With some gain they just sing!

Re: Ibanez neck pick up

What does he call "bluesy"? Like old school BB King, British Blues, Texas Blues? Not to be facetious, just asking. That said it's going to be REAL hard to get a tone from the neck pickupof a 24 fret guitar that is "bluesy" in the traditional sense. Like Metalman said, the AN and Liquifire can both get some bluesy tones because they are made to get a fat neck tone. That said depending what "Petrucci set" you are talking about he could have one of those. John has used a Humbucker from Hell, Air Norton, custom AN, Liquifire, Illuminator (n), and Sonic Ecstasy (n). I've got both the Liquifire and Illuminator neck models. The Liquifire is in an 24 fret Prestige S Ibanez and the Illuminator in a PRS CU24. The guitars are not the same but the Illuminator to me seems a little girthier and thicker. The Liquifire has more presence to my ears. I have not used a HFH, but many guys say it has a very bright sound that is between a P90 and strat neck pup tone.
