Re: Ibanez or Jackson???

How is this even a poll? This is like asking... Hey guys do i want a hamburger or pizza for dinner... When your in the mood for one the other wont do. Do you want a pointy guitar? Get the Jackson... Do you want a super strat shape? Get the Ibby...The quality is a wash so whichever blows your skirt up more is the one you buy.

I'll take a Soloist over an RG ANY DAY of the week.

Re: Ibanez or Jackson???

By the way, I have a Jackson KVMGQ Pro King V, basically like the one you're looking at, and I love it. The only thing it needs is a pick-up change (Has EMG's, and I want to put duncans in it) and a truss rod adjustment, but other than that, it sounds really aggressive, and I can pull off some wicked soloing on it. The other guitar player in my band absolutely loves the sound and the feel of it.

Re: Ibanez or Jackson???

I'd go for the Jackson. I have a soloist SLSMG. Neck through, all mahogany, string through body. It came with EMG HZ passive pups, hated them. I dropped in an Air Zone and Air norton and, to me, it's the best sounding guitar I have and my other main guitar is a JP6. The Jackson plays great and the upper fret access is beauty.

Re: Ibanez or Jackson???

Ognjen, you didn't say where you are based. I would say just go to the shop with the best service, best tech department, regardless of the brand. As others said, most probably the same factory (or even worked on by the same persons) would have made both.

Re: Ibanez or Jackson???

Interesting, Trey. I'm the opposite, I most always prefer an Ibanez to a Jackson. I most prefer the Ibanez necks to Jacksons. Might I ask what lends you to Jackson?

Ha--so you are opposite of me. Lol

I love the Jackson necks--while I'm not a huge fan of the compound radius fretboards, I like the over all shape of the neck on a Jackson better than an Ibanez. Except for the prestige I owned (sold because I hated the neck) every Ibanez I've owned just felt cheap. I know they have some great quality guitars but they just felt cheap to me.

The Ibanez necks are usually too thin compared to the Jacksons. I have an Ibanez Iceman that has a decent neck on it, but I don't like the full 16" radius fretboard.

I basically got sick of buying a guitar and completely reworking it so I started assembling them myself to get what I want without buying for a part or two. And that's actually how I got started on this forum--advice for my first "assembly" which was an old Charvel that I put a Fender neck on. :)

Re: Ibanez or Jackson???

I much prefer jackson over Ibanez every day of my life. I have tried to like Ibanez guitars as over the decades I have ran into many that Look incredible and just call for attention. I sit down plug in and hate it after only a few minutes.
For me I feel Ibanez doesn't fully understand the concept of Higher performance guitars. Thats my opinion and mine alone. Jackson on the other hand fully understand what it takes to build an amazing guitar at all the given price points.

Remember man, when you sit down and play, it doesn't matter what the name on the headstock says, it matters how it feels and plays. It matters IF this Instrument can produce what your heart is calling for. For me It's Charvel and Jackson followed tightly by ESP. These Guitars can produce my feelings and really speak when I ask them to.

Good luck with your quest man

Re: Ibanez or Jackson???

I dunno
I have two lower model RG's
one with SD pickups
the one with the SD's sounds incredible

they play well
I like the necks but they arent for everyone

to me the fit and finish on mine are exceptional

the newer ones I have seen on the Rack at GC
did not have the same fit and finish

there were fret ends hanging off the edge of the board
the binding was sticking straight out
not real good at all
several models priced at $400 and up

not cool Ibanez, not cool

Re: Ibanez or Jackson???

Both the Jackson and the Ibby in question are both made in Indonesia.

IMO, I'd buy a used MIJ or MIA.

Its about placebo. remember how beaubremels (or whatever is his name) was ranting about this one being crooked, garbage by design, dead by birth, etc...

But you will rarely see people openly comlain about a MIJ like this one :

Simply we are pre-programmed to operate according to this mindset.

Re: Ibanez or Jackson???

Too bad this isnt the truth... even Ibanez themselves acknowledges indirectly that the indonesian made ibbys' are lower quality. Like anything sure you can find flaws in a $11,000 PRS private stock.. but they are damn rare. The difference between the indo stuff and the jpn stuff is the height of the bar for what does and doesnt pass quality control.

Re: Ibanez or Jackson???

Ok I correct myself. Its placebo. And marketing.
My most unstable and rusty guitar is the only MIA I have (Carvin DC135). My most rusty trem is OFR (germany). My worse locking nuts were made in Germany and Japan. My Indonesian Floyd Rose II was much higher above than my OFR in every aspect. My Indonesian Kramer 210 still looks much better than my (same year 1988) MIA Carvin, and the list goes on.
It is just that we are pre-programmed to look for faults in non MIG/MIA/MIJ equipment while accepting the "bugs" in MIG/MIA/MIJ as "features". Quite simple. You in Italy, must have been witness of the e.g. superior VW vs inferior Fiat frenzy, no?

Re: Ibanez or Jackson???

Not going to vote..I'm not an RG fan, but I'd pick my Ibby Sabres over any Jackson (or other guitar out there for that matter lol) ..there's nothing that shreds like an S-Series ..lol..nothing..& they sound thick, tight & chunky as hell for rhythm too.. (check out Carcass or Testament)

Re: Ibanez or Jackson???

I've loved enough Jackson and Ibanez that I'd base my decision on things other than brand perception. The two best guitars I've ever owned were one of each, but I could probably walk into Guitar Center today and find examples from both that I wouldn't want to play if you gave them to me.

As some others have said, I'd decide based on what I was in the mood for, and on the experience I had playing the individual guitars. I think some of the generalizations that get made about these two brands don't really hold up when you play multiple instruments of various models from different series over the years. Both companies have more than one neck profile; both companies have heavy and light guitars; both have clunkers; both have vertical market presence and ways of "punishing" you for not spending more; both can be fiercely competitive in certain price brackets.

But personally, I'd kind of want both of those.

Re: Ibanez or Jackson???

id take the Ibanez..prefer jacksons normally but im more of a traditional body player..like a dinky/soloist.. i seriously dislike V's or any other exotic body style

Re: Ibanez or Jackson???

Pick the neck and bridge you like the most. You might not like either of those specific models.

I wouldn't take either of those guitars. I don't like Floyds and I can't stand the Ibanez Gibraltar bridges. I would prefer the Jackson neck over the Ibanez, but definitely prefer a Strat shaped body.

Re: Ibanez or Jackson???

Pick the neck and bridge you like the most.

This is pretty good advice, especially for neck-through and set-neck guitars. While you can often swap one trem or fixed bridge for another, it's not always inexpensive to get the one you want, and it can be difficult and pricey to change one type of bridge for another.

For example, it's probably not a good idea to buy a guitar with a floating trem if you hate floating trems and are thinking, "Well, I'll just fill it in and put a TOM & stop-tail on" -- especially if you've never done anything like that before. Sometimes the geometry alone precludes certain mods, when the neck is fixed. If you know enough to know that you can do it and make it cost-effective, sure.

If you're looking at a mid-price guitar with a cost-cutting trem on it, you might be ahead to buy a used guitar of a higher series with the trem you really want. You'll might spend a fair amount more, but other things on that guitar are likely to be better, too.

Re: Ibanez or Jackson???

Choosing my words carefully here.

My experience of either owning or working on Ibanez instruments is that the MIJ examples are more precisely engineered than the MIK, CII and MIC products.

Similarly, I find MIJ Charvel instruments more precisely engineered than MIK or MIM stuff. I have zero experience on Jacksons. (Do I hear a stifled gasp from Jessie?)

Precise could mean better fettled. Equally, it could mean mechanical and soulless. This aspect is subjective. So is the suitability of neck profiles and, for instance, the way that a guitar hangs on a strap. My preferences are only relevant to me.

Try both guitars. Ideally, try more than one of each. You will know the right one when it arrives.
