Ibanez RG350DX

Hey all -- Let me start by saying i'm new to the whole guitar scene. Got my first guitar, an Ibanez RG350DX, 2 and a half years ago. (Stock Pickups) My interests are in Avenged Sevenfold, Metallica, Guns N' Roses. I've recently been told by a few friends that, based on my styles of music, that the SH-8 Invader Bridge & Neck pickups are godly. Now I don't know what to do, since I literally have no clue.

1) SH-8 Invader Bridge and Neck? Or just Bridge and Stock Neck?

2) Will it achieve what I want?

Thanks in Advance

Re: Ibanez RG350DX

Rob,
Hi and welcome! What kind of amp are you using?? This will help us know how much heat we need to give you at the guitar.
I will say this, Synyster gates uses Invader bridge and neck.. Zacky uses Jb.
The Invader is a big crushing sound. The JB sings more for leads. Alot of 80s metal was made with the JB. Old Metallica used the Distortion before they switched to EMG. Invader would be a good choice as Ibanez's can sound thin.

Re: Ibanez RG350DX

I'd go with invader in the bridge and a JB in the neck if you're craving Avenged tones.

Re: Ibanez RG350DX

Well those bands you listed have different tones ,equipment and styles.
There is no "swiss-tool" PU that you can just throw it in and get all those tones.

The Invader would have problems with Guns'n Roses stuff. And wouldn't have enough bottom for Metallica if you don't use a recto.

The Duncan Distortion would be more efficient to dance in all territories. But it won't give you %100 any of them.

The PATB1 is the best PU for a floyded Basswood guitar under hi-gain.It could be a tad dark ,wich can be changed with a 1 megaohm pot.

Re: Ibanez RG350DX

I had a RG350, and it was loaded with a Custom bridge, Lil '59 bridge in the middle, and a '59 neck, and it was one of the most versatile setups I've ever heard.

My RG570 covers alot of ground as well with a C5, Virtual Vintage Blues in the middle and a 59b in the neck position

Re: Ibanez RG350DX

Yeah, I know i'm gonna catch a lot of flak for this one. But i'm currently running it through a Frontman 25R. Yes, it blows more than a drunk Paris Hilton on prom night. But check this, I have way more than enough money to spend on a new amp, i'm talking... 1,000 USD. So if there is a specific amp I could pick up along with the new pickups, let me know. Like I said, i'm a newbie when it comes to these things

Re: Ibanez RG350DX

Take the guitar, as is, and go start trying out amps. Play as many as you can, figure out the ones you like, then go from there.

Re: Ibanez RG350DX

Used Peavey 5150
Used Peavey JSX
B-52 AT-100s are good
Randall T2 or V2 I hear are awesome for metal.

Dude, I stated it from the beginning. I am new at the technical aspects of everything outside playing the guitar. I'm sorry for my ignorance, I just came here to try and learn this stuff

I dont think they were knocking you. Have you seen a marshall stack?? A head is when the amplifier part is in one small cabinet and then the speakers are in a separate cabinet. A marshall stack is a head on top of 2 cabinets.

Your amp has the amp and speaker in the same box, it would be called a combo.

You should decide what avenue you want to take first. Better pickups in your guitar will slightly improve the sound you are getting with your current amp.
A better amp will give you a better sound with the guitar as it is now. You may not want to change pickups once youve heard your guitar through a better amp.

Re: Ibanez RG350DX

Thanks so much for the replies guys, especially Bloodrose. I can see that buying a new amp would probably be the best way to start. I'll probably purchase the invader for the bridge and the jb for the neck like Rowan said. It seems like that's what I want. I was looking through guitar-center's site, and I found a Marshall MG Guitar Amplifier Half Stack with MG100HDFX Head and MG412A Cabinet --

100 watts @ 4 ohms

80 watts @ 8 ohms

4 ohms is the minimum impedance

Now since i'm a nub, I don't know if that's a good amp or not. I guess the only real way is to test them personally. Just wanting some feedback.

Re: Ibanez RG350DX

Best advise for amp shopping is try as many as you can to see what floats your boat.. Then, know it will sound even better once you put in your duncans!!

If I helped at all, you are very welcome! Let us know what you come up with!!

Dude internet is not the best place to "understand" the tone of the post!
JB was not knocking on you i think!
We all where ,and even are noobs. So don't feel bad!
But ,if you really want to buy an amp..you need to try them out. With that budget ,you can get some great deals.Go 2. hand..
The best way is to go to a guitar/amp shop ,try many ,and read about the "right" ones in internet!Your ear is the best jury and we all can't help you about your own tone!
So go ahead ,test some gear and let us know "wich" amps you liked. So we can help you about the reliability ,simliar but cheaper models etc!!!
Cheers!

Re: Ibanez RG350DX

Daemon...an invader not having enough bottom!!?? wow...now that's a first ahaha. Hey Rob, welcome to the forum!! I'd suggest the amp before anything. Not only does a better/louder amp help when you're jamming, but all in all, the amp colors your tone a LOT. really the best thing is go to a store and just play em all with your guitar and whatever pedals you use. Here it's really up to your ear. As for the pickups...avenged, metallica, and guns really are different sounding things. I'm not gonna tell you Invader just because I'm very fond of it. Syn uses it and I think they also used it in Master of Puppets. But really a JB/Invader setup will be hot. Like hot hot. So you should really think up the fact that you'll probably want to have a very versatile guitar later on.

So, in a nutshell
Invader (Synyster Gates): Hot, tight, strong bass and mids. Some say it has a shrill high end but with me that's not the case. In my guitar it sounds tight. Some think it's muddy...
EMG 81 (Kirk Hammett): Compressed, tight, kinda on the bright side. It's been branded lifeless and sterile, but altogether it's a good pickup. Just not my pickup. Maybe a Blackout?? but they really have a similar tone, just the blackout is improved...
EMG 60 (James Hetfield): No idea about this one
JB (Zacky Vengeance): it cuts through, and it screams, thanks to the high-mid spike it has, problem is, some people find it too ice-picky, and not tight enough. i think in a band situation this pickup shines...
Alnico ll Pro (Slash): Smooth, warm, low output. Really nice pickup. You may not find it hot enough though. It has really smooth highs.

I won't suggest any of these pups specifically though. Just try a lot of 'em. And play similar guitars with different set ups so you can figure out what do you want in a pickup. remember, AMP FIRST!!!
