Ibanez TS pedals?

I'm looking for THE overdrive pedal for me and the sound that i'm looking for is as my friend at the local music store calls "Jazz overdrive". It's kinda slighty overdriven clean sound. He told me that a Ibanez TS9 would suit me perfectly.

I have never tried a Ibanez pedal but i know that there has been some discusions here at the forum about it. I've read several threads about modding the pedal, what does the mod do?

Thanks! :burnout:

*Edit:* What is the difference between the TS9, TS9DX and TS808?

Re: Ibanez TS pedals?

TS-808 mods are designed to replace cheap parts (carbon film I think) with carbon composite parts (dirty/bluesy, bleeds off some top end). The heart of the TS-808 mod is replacing the current TS-9 chip with the same chip they used in the original 808's, which has less gain, but is smoother overall. These are great as a first pedal in a dual overdrive setup.

Other mods are designed to "hot rod" the TS-9. They usually involve replacing the carbon film parts with metal film (cleaner, lower noise, can be "glassy" to some). Sometimes they're also modded for more gain and more bass. These are great as a second pedal in a dual overdrive setup.

Which pedal would you recommend to "jazz overdrive"?

Re: Ibanez TS pedals?

Personally, I prefer the Boss DS-1 because it has great overdriven tones and I can also turn my guitar's volume control down and then get stellar clean tones. Perfect for blues and jazz, IMO. Lew

I have tried modded and unmodded Ds-1s and i don't like any of them IMO :)

Well...to each his own then! :) The DS-1 is a pretty awesome pedal tho. Depends how you use it. I set it to about 1/2 way. Most guys don't know quite how to use one, IMO. I showed my buddy AJ how to use one and now it's a constant fixture in his pedal board...and "on" all the time. Which is how I use it. Lew

Re: Ibanez TS pedals?

Its very subjective, but I've been trying out OD pedals and the TS-9 (stock), is the one I like best so far. I still may have to pick up a keely modded DS-1 one of these days though..... :)

Re: Ibanez TS pedals?

this is a quick subquestion to add to this thread, but so long as we're on the topic of Ibanez TS9's, what's the difference between The Tonelock version and the regular Tubescreamer, all anyone ever writes about the Tonelock version is that it has the same circuit as the TS9, but there has to be something more to account for a 30$ drop in the price.

I'm thinking about getting a TS9, and this is what's blowing my mind. help please?

Re: Ibanez TS pedals?

They are great pedals and I am curious to check out at DS-1 as well.
Here's some good info on TS pedals: http://www.analogman.com/ts9.htm I have his Silver Mod pedal and it's a lot of fun. SDluxer's are excellent too I am sure!

Show us how to use one. I wanna read Lew's Guide to Using a DS-1.

Re: Ibanez TS pedals?

I've read some old threads about the TS808 and TS9 and it's still unclear which would fit me. If i got it right the Reissue 808 is as good as the original but the dowside is that it's lacks volume and lows plus the switch is very small, and it costs a fortune!

The TS9 "must" be modded but the design is excellent.

Did i get it right?

Re: Ibanez TS pedals?

The TS-9 is a great pedal, made better with mods. I used a regular un-modded one for years and always liked the sound. Then I had Keeley mod mine and it improved the low end, and added more gain. It changed the tone slightly as well-a definite improvement.

I also have an orignal TS-9 which sounds much smoother, but a little darker as well. This pedal is awesome-but with the older TS-9s, there is more variation from pedal to pedal. So try before you buy (if you can-these are rare to find in person).

As far as the DS-1 is concerned, I think Lew's must be an older made in japan version. The newer DS-1's are very grainy and buzzy and compress way too much. Even if you turn the gain down, you are still left with a thin tone.

There's way too much hog wash regarding the TS9/808 issues....Here's the quick scoop on the 2 pedals...The reissue 808 is a great pedal and it's pricey..Change 2 resistors in the TS9 and the TA57778 (On newer TS9s)and you have an 808...I've modded many many Tube Screamers and the difference any of us hear or have heard is due purely because of overall circuit tolerences...The pots are the biggest margin with + or - 20% tolerences...A guy that knows what he's doing inside any of the Tube Screamers can tweak the gain, lows, tone control circuit etc. and easily tailor the circuit to meet the needs of the player....All mods on this series of pedal are based on either giving the pedal more lows, more gain,warmer,darker,smoother,brighter,articulate,etc...

Mod a TS9 as this pedal is cheaper compared to the 808,but in the end, both pedals are the same pedals, even the circuit boards are the same...I Know... I've modded plenty of TS9s that put a stock late 70s 808 completely to shame! Guys would leave the 808 in their drawers and use the modded TS9 every single time...LOL Ask 59Paul or Norman or Lew...

John modded two TS-9's for me. Both sound much better than my one remaining stock TS-9 and my overpriced 808 reissue which I don't know what to do with now! :smack: It's brand new and been used once or twice. The Spina Modded TS-9's are just way better sounding. Lew

Do a search on the net for TS9/808 mods...You need a picture to show you where the 2 resistors are....Here's 1 I found for you..

Thanks lew....59Paul ran into the same scenario, except he owns at least 2 original 808s and he likes the modded TS pedals better...Or at least he did...
