Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

It looks a little on the busy side to me. I really have never liked any of the Ibanez type guitars for myself though!!

I used to have an RG470 in New Penny finish. It was an impulse buy. I installed a set of DiMarzio Breeds and the Guitar smoked. The Floyd felt great. Then I broke a string. It had been so long since I had a Floyd-equipped guitar that I forgot what kind of time and effort it took to restring and get it back in tune. I traded it.... I did really like it though...

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

Okay, I showed the pic to my wife. She didn't like it at all.... She said, "That guitar is not pretty to me and it doesn't suit you". I can understand. Well, I need to find a guitar that suits me. I was actually saving my money for a Variax 700 trem model. The UV777 is $1800 new. That's pretty steep....

I am pretty conservative... I walked in with a surf green Tele Thinline awhile back and everyone thought I was nuts...

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

I don't know their prices, but maybe you could have Warmoth build you a 7-string?

Let her see it in person...

My wife was floored by it when I brought it home. I thought I was going to get my head torn off but it was my realization that if a guitar's beatiful or interesting looking then it gets much less resistance.

Gigging out was where that thing shone though....total rock star look to it. Get the lights hitting that pickguard and it just blows right back. Very cool effect!

I miss the looks more than I miss the instrument though.

Warmoth and Carvin do nice 7's but the problem is that you're married to the thing unless you buy used. We had a guy on CraigsList out of Boston that posted weekly a Carvin that he couldn't get rid of. Started at almost 7 bills and I think finally dropped it below 350 before it vanished.

My fave 7 was a Schecter C7+. I had a Tone Zone in the bridge and a PAF Pro in the neck. Killer combo on that; no tone but two volumes and coils were split. Real killer metal axe that just soaked up the low end.

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

You could always try out an RG7620 which come stock with Blaze pickups. IMO just as good as te UV

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

Seems alot of you guys are giving advice on things you have no experience with ;).

The UV777BK is an AMAZING instrument. It's one of the best playing guitars I've ever laid hands on, and for the 1100-1300 they go used, it's a pretty damn good bang for buck ratio. Stock pickups kickass, IMO.

The trem is arguably the best 7 string trem ever made. If you take the (short) time to learn how to set them up properly, they aren't that bad at all.

You could go Warmoth, but you'd be stuck with ****ty body shapes, and ****ty scale lengths. Warmoth doesn't know how to do a 7 string... they only offer 25" and 28.5" scale lengths... what the ****? 25 is FAR too short for a 7, and 28.5 is something even Zerb might be turned off by :laugh2:

Also, if you're going to pay 1800 new, you're insane! http://www.ericsguitars.com has then for 1500 in hardcase ;).

Honestly think the instruments are ****ing gorgeous though... amazing instruments all around.

Actually, it's stock with DiMarzio New-7's... basically the same as the DiMarzio/Ibanez pickups in guitars these days.

Are you still considering selling your 7620, tho? I'll be in the market for one in the next week or so.

You know, I have a 7620 (dot inlays & Lo-Pro Edge 7, right?) that I impulse bought used and have played about 3 times in as many years. Seriously, I spent more time picking out a strap for it than playing it since, it's ~that~ lonely a guitar.

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

Could it be that 7's just aren't for you? ;)

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

Modern day Ibanez are a far cry from those we where used to back then, I have set up a dozen new ones, then some ancient S and Vai came in for their annual setup makeover.....we just looked at them and thought...wow what can happend in a decade or more?
The Floyds from Gotoh are cool as ever by the way:D(well the expensive ones)

Absolutely no question about it. The failing is totally my own, please don't think I was disparaging the 7620. If anything, I was probably hoping you would volunteer to give it a more loving home. :laugh2:

I used the 7620 just long enough to write a riff or two, which I liked enough to warrant transposing to a 6 string with the B string tuned up a half step to simulate the bottom six strings of the 7620 with a capo at the fifth fret. Then I liked ~that~ tuning and ended up writing some more parts in it. From there I ended up with a dropped-D version (D A D G C E).

So, yeah, I tend to cause problems for myself. :smack:

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

has anybody ever tried a 7 string starting with E as the thickest, using an 11's set, plus an 008 A string?

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

I think rusty cooley uses that setup, I could be wrong about that, but the guy from limp bizkit tuned that way, I think he went from D up to F/G or something like that.

Right now I have my 7 string tuned from B to F and it sounds tight as hell.

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

I love my carvin 7 string...though I'll be the first to admit that it did have its problems. The pickups were a little weak, and my duncans didn't fit as a direct replacement. That and the 7 string licensed floyd they got on there is about 2 pounds of **** in a 1 pound bag. Luckly, though, an 7 string OFR is supposed to be a direct replacement. It's just difficult as all hell to find one though.

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

I once came across a lefty RG7620, in dark blue. At that time I was saving for a decent fivestring so I couldn't cough up the cash. I still regret letting that guitar pass though... The lefty version is very rare :blackeye:

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

I think its a cool looking guitar, just not my cup 'o tea. But that doesn't matter since I'm not the one who's buying it. ;)

If you like it . . . get it.

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

I think a lot of companies that have tried to release 7 strings have screwed up in many areas. But that's just me.

I am slightly biased ... but I seriously think the Dean EVO 7 was one of the best designed (of the mass production companies) ones out there.

I don't mind the 7's from Schecter and Ibanez but I tend to gravitate towards the Hardtails over the floating Floyd.

In terms of Scale length I did have a chance to play a custom 7 that had a 24 3/4 scale length and it was quite nice (esp. for bluesy/jazz stuff). So I don't buy into a notion that certain scale lengths will or will not work for 7 strings. Personally I'm quite happy with 25.5

Well it also depends on what tuning you'll be using. If you're going for A standard tuning on a 24.75" 7 string you'll have to get some super-thick strings and you'll run into intonatino problems. However, if you're running standard might be stretching it, but I think drop-c is probably the lowest tuning you should go with that scale, but that's my opinion of course.

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

The fact that it's a 7-stringer isn't the reason for my interest. I'd love it if it were 6-strings.... 7 strings is a ++
