My friend (bass player) and I (guitar player) were arguing over our favorite guitar company. He believes that Fenders are cheap, overated guitars that have been replaced by his favorite company, Ibanez. I, of course, think differently. I know this is juvenile, but I want to know what other people think of these comments.

Re: Ibanez vs Fender: Two morons at war!

What in the world are you talking about? Fender and Ibanez is a rather apples & oranges comparison. Jackson or ESP would've made more sense.

Re: Ibanez vs Fender: Two morons at war!

Basically, my friend thinks that the only reason why people play fenders are because Hendrix, Clapton, etc. play(ed) them. He believes that Fenders are outdated, and the technology in Ibanezes is far superior.

Re: Ibanez vs Fender: Two morons at war!

You can get a good fender under $1000, hard to say the same for ibanez. It depends which price range we're talking about.

Re: Ibanez vs Fender: Two morons at war!

While Ibanez guitars aren't bad by any means, it's hard to compete with a company with as impressive diversity and prestige as Fender.

Re: Ibanez vs Fender: Two morons at war!

I like both. I'd say fender, but my predisposition towards hollowbodies makes me say Ibanez, if only for the Artcore line.

The technology in Ibanez guitars is superior.

The thing is, there's people who prefer muscle cars to Nissan Skylines. And they've got a fair point. :D

Because skylines are so high tech...

Quality wise, I think they're pretty comparable. I don't really play any of the cheapie RGs anymore, but the entire S series (S, SA, SZ) and up are all fantastic.

The idea of Fender being inferior to anybody is completely ridiculous, though.

Re: Ibanez vs Fender: Two morons at war!

IS YOUR FRIEND A TOOL? Yes, Fender_Punk is here to SMASH down Ibanez. If it were not for the FENDER Stratocaster, the idiots at Ibanez wouldn't have a guitar rip off and call the RG. Further, Leo Fender INVENTED the solid-body electric bass (Prescision Bass), and set the standard so high with the Jazz Bass it hasn't been topped, so your BASS playing friend owes Leo another nod.

Also take into account if I were to pick up an RG I could debatably (spelling?) get some good metal tones, or maybe a good jazz tone with an Art Core (which, yes they are a good value for the money) but if I pick up a Strat I can go from punk to ska to blues to metal to modern rock to rockabilly to jazz.

As for Fender having inferior technology, both mainly work with passive electronics, which are both the same, but Fender still wins. This is because Fender, as far as I have found have better electronics, far better stock pups and innovated a bit in the electronics department. Not to mention that you can get Strats is SSS, HSS, HSH (well, can mod to HSH), or even down size two a 2 pup combo like HH, SH, HS or SS. I have yet to see an Ibanez SSS.

I could go on and on but I don't want to feel like I'm beating on a dead horse with nuclear bombs!!! You're friend is obviously an idiot who needs to objectively look at both brands. If he wants to say they're outdated, tell him to check out John Mayer, NOFX, Franz Ferdinand, U2, Snow Patrol, Iron Maiden, Rage Against The Machine (and with that, Audioslave), Some NIN, John 5 (and the bands he has/is played/playing for), Avril Lavinge, Flogging Molly, Leftover Crack (and on that note, MANY other ska and ska/punk bands) and ME!!!!

So much for being outdated....

Tell yer friend to stop worrying about why other people are playing other guitars, and instead focus on why he's playing his guitar ;).

Any guitarist who's worth half a poo could pick up pretty much anything and make it work.

Seriously.... you name-checked Avril Lavigne in your argument for Fender?

Re: Ibanez vs Fender: Two morons at war!

This is friggin' dumb. Who cares, you can judge one guitar vs. another, but not an entire company vs. another. You can argue the fact that Ibanez started life as most Japanese companies do, copying and improving designs, not forging new ground, but let's be honest... That's all Fender's been doing for about 40 years too.

Play what you like, nothing else matters.

Re: Ibanez vs Fender: Two morons at war!

I had a friend who was a drummer who once told me "Why don't you play an Ibanez? Nobody plays those Fenders and Gibson's anymore"

Like I said, he is a drummer.........

Thought you'd all get a kick outta that statement, I've never let him live it down!

Re: Ibanez vs Fender: Two morons at war!

this argument makes no sense. fender is a great company. ibanez is a great company

1. you cant judge a company by the artists that endorse the product. steve vai, satrianti, gilbert, and the dude from the mars volta play ibanez guitars. hell, tom morello actually endorsed ibanez while he was in rage against the machine but went to fender to get a custom shop made when he started audioslave. good players endorse BOTH companies.
oh yeah, when bragging about gear + bands using said gear you may want to include artists with technical skill. maybe mention hendrix next time instead of NOFX...

2. you cant judge a company by what it did in the distant past. if you did this then you would clearly say that FORD MOTORS is the best car company because of such innovations like the assembly line. 'everyone else just copied ford so ford is still the best.' sorry but it doesnt work that way.

3. bragging about electronics will get you nowhere. ibanez uses cheap crappy pickups in their budget guitars and fender uses cheap crappy pickups in their budget guitars. ibanez uses dimarzio pickups in their high end guitars, fender uses their good pickups in their high end guitars. the most popular modification to a guitar is chaning the pickups so for lots of people this doesnt matter. oh yeah, my ibanez came with a LR Baggs piezo system in the bridge. i have yet to see a fender with an acoustic pickup in the bridge so does that make ibanez the winner?

4. never judge a company by the range of tones a product produces. if you did this then you could also say that 'soldano makes terrible amplifiers because they are only good for a lead distortion sound'. that idea is just dumb AND both the RG and Strat can do anything from bluegrass to prog rock.

Re: Ibanez vs Fender: Two morons at war!

I actually sat here and thought about it (silly me) and if you take away frivolous stuff like artist endorsements and the like, you really can't rate one company above the other in terms of their current product lines.

If you prefer uber-thin necks and 24-fret guitars, Ibanez probably has more choices for you.

If you prefer thicker necks and 22-fret guitars, Fender probably has more choices.

About the only thing I can think of is that Ibanez really has no Telecaster equivalent in their current product line, and Fender doesn't have nearly as many set-neck and neck-through models.
