Has anyone seen that new locking trem on the Ibanez S? Instead of a knife edge it's got a hinge mount... I thought to myself - why didn't I think of that?
the new ZR whammy in the S-series ibanez works on a bearing pivot. it's coupled with a tremsetter which helps the whammy return to its neutral/ centre notch after you mess with the whammy. the trem setter isn't a new contraption, it's already in the market for quite some time but hats off to ibanez for coupling it with a very smooth trem for maximum effect.
in use, it's one of those devices that'll make you look down on the rest of the whammy incarnations in the market, simply because it works well. however, it adds considerable weight to the guitar body which isn't everyone's cup of tea. do give the ZR-less S-series a try just to compare the mass of the 2. this issue aside, the ZR is a very desireable mechanism to own especially if you are whammy reliant & get ticked off easily with regards to tuning issues, especially when it's an entailment of restringing.
hey good to know that! i have 2 S-series myself but these are pre-ZR equipped models the S model's popularity have been waning lately because there're no ambassador to hold the guitar in good stead after the departure of Frank Gambale to Yamaha... that's how i feel about it. also, there are the S-series spinoff like the SA/ SZ series which offers a different tone & feel to rival the S.
