Fellas,
I live in the south. I learned guitar in the south. I play southern style (lots of bends, slurs, blues, southern rock). I love the Allman Brothers, The Black Crowes, Gov't Mule and tons of British blues/blues-rock guys: Clapton, Kossof, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Jethro Tull, Knopfler, etc. I'm also hip to some of the younger guys in this circuit: Derek Trucks
bowdown: not that I could ever play like him), Joe Bonammassa, and John Mayer.
But, alas, what is the common ground in all these guys? I play the same way as them! (stylistically speaking). With the exception of Jeff Beck, Joe Bonammassa, and Derek Trucks. I can basically play anything these guys can play.
I've been listening to a lot of slick pop stuff lately. You know, early nineties stuff with all the keyboard patches and the guitar that doesn't really show up until the solo. All of these guitar players have that "L.A. (west coast) sound! Kind of shreddy, but not excesive. But all the solos end with that big 4-notes-per-string cresendo thing (ROCK!) I guess one would just call it 'rock' guitar playing.
I would love to get some of these tricks and styles under my belt. I auditioned for a pop guy and I think my blues/rock style kind of turned him off. The last pop group I played for did strictly R&B so I could fake my way through it.
So, So-Cal guys, what's your advice? I'm ready to expand my playing west!:drive:
