Idea for a Strat pickup

How about a tapped single coil that sounds like a vintage Strat pickup when tapped, and a P90 when full?

I have no idea if it's possible, but if it were, I bet it would be very cool.

Perhaps I will speak to the Custom Shop ...

Re: Idea for a Strat pickup

I do that I the custom sho I can make you a vintage Strat and then rewind it hotter specs Maybe it wont sound like the P90 but we can try that will be a custom shop deal $120.00 each.

Wow! I will have to give this some further thought. Thanks MJ!

Re: Idea for a Strat pickup

okay seymour says a qtr libr sounds like a p 90 and it fits in like a strat pickup and it being tapped would bring resistance down to 5ish 6ish isnt that what you want

maybe you arent being clear, maybe im not being clear or maybe there is no clarity anywhere

Re: Idea for a Strat pickup

Very interesting- Can you give an overall idea how this is possible? I get the winding idea, but always thought that much of the p90 difference came from the different size and magnet issues- Are these two pups closer cousins than I have imagined?

Re: Idea for a Strat pickup

i always wondered what a medium output P90 would sound like tapped? would it be anything like a strat sound maybe?

Re: Idea for a Strat pickup

Well I can't say that mine sounds exactly like a P90, but it's definitely very hot-P90-ish. That's what folks tell me who play my Strat or hear me playing it. (To my ear, it's borderline humbucker.) It's 10.7k with a 7.4k tap -- and I get better quack in the bridge middle position full on than with the tap.

I'm confident that MJ can at the very least make you one pretty much like mine. You have to decide on the magnets though -- Alnico 5 (like mine, a rewound Fender Fat 50's) wound that hot will give you the tone and punch of a tire iron across the bridge of your nose, while Alnico 2 at those specs is best described as a "refined tone with balls".

And clps :)

Sorry, got no clips or the technology to make them. But if you're in the LA area, you can come and play the thing in person...

Hmm ... very interesting. Thanks for the review!
