Hi, i have ordereed a pod xt and now would like an amp to go with it. shall i go for something that has a great clean channel and ignore any other channels the amp may have? maybe i can get a good clean tube amp? any suggestions for one of those that i may be able to get cheapish?

any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thankyou

would the podxt work if i just bought a 1x12 cabinet?

i don't really understand the in and outs of amps. i know the xt is meant to be used as a preamp.

is a power amp not just speakers?

Think of the podxt as a big stomp box. you still have to plug it into an amplifier of some sort to make it loud. in the mean time, it'll blow out your ears with headphones only.

In an amp, there are two main sections (this is rather simplified). There's a preamp (what goes on before the amp, conditioning the signal from the guitar... tone controls, gain, bright switch, etc.) and then there's the amp part that "multiplies" the signal coming from the preamp, making it louder, amplifiying it. that's the "power section" some call it.

You can use that POD as a preamp if you wish. All you need then is something to amplify that signal.

that new Crate Powerblock might be a great solution. You'd still need a speaker cab, but for something small and efffective to accompany that POD, the powerblock gets rave reviews.

This Create Powerblock...does it do cleans? also while iam on the subject instead of making yet another thread, i was wondering about wattage. the powerblock 150watt. that may be too much for bedroom playing. If i got a 50 watt cabinet for example, what effect would this have?

Re: Ideal amp to go with a podxt?

Hey I have a pod XTL.
It has sounded good thru pretty much any amp I have tried it in (it has been a lot) but of course better in some than others...

OK check out the Atomic amps, they are made just for pods

Also one of the best ones I ever heard it through was a Mesa Boogie Nomad 45.

A fender Hot Rod Deluxe worked pretty good and they can usually be had for around $400 give or take.

Hope that helps some!

Re: Ideal amp to go with a podxt?

Is $400 cheap enuf for an all tube 1X12 amp?

That Marshall that you are ebaying would have probably worked pretty good to

Re: Ideal amp to go with a podxt?

Those fenders are closer to £400 second here in the U.K and the jcm900 i currently have has no clean channel

Re: Ideal amp to go with a podxt?

A POD is not a big stompbox nor is it a preamp it is a direct recording unit...it can be used as a stompbox and even as a preamp but it simply doesn't work very well like that...your best bet is to get an atomic and use it as a 1x12 combo or to use it as it was intended...a unit for direct recording.

Re: Ideal amp to go with a podxt?

The regular POD is toughter to work with..Def wanna go Atomic that way.

However the XT Live has some extra eq functioning specifically tailored for running into the front ends of combos and heads, as well as in the loop of combos and heads and works much better that way. I was able to get some great sounds out of it through the front end of my Rivera and using this EQ system.

But Atomic is nice and easy. Only thing is, it still sounds like a recording for the most part. Doesn't quite get the "real amp" openess of sound because if you turn off the Mic sims, it gets buzzy and harsh (the Atomics speaker is not like a guitar amp speaker, its very neutral and only there to accurately represent the modelled tone) However the natural thump of the Atomics cab is incredible, it do sound like a closed back 4x12 when you get the EQ right.

Right now the XTL/Atomic is my main rig, its loud enough to piss off the neighbors on a regular basis, believe you me :D But I'm always looking for something better.

Re: Ideal amp to go with a podxt?

My pod never sounded good through any amp I put it through. Three plexi Marshalls, a Crate ministack (crap anyways) and a 65 Fender twin. It was explained to me this way--the Pod colors the sound of the guitar. The amp colors the sound of the guitar. They will never work well together. Scott's idea, though I've never done it sounds good, using only the power section of the amp but the best way to go IMHO would be either the Atomic or get a power amp which is what most folks do with these units. In theory, you would want to get a cabinet that is neutral so that the true sounds of each modeled amp and cabinet come through without being colored.

There is a great site for Line 6 owners where you could probably get some very tasty advice.

Hope this all helps but in the end, what sounds best to YOU is all that matters. And the audience. And the record company. And the people buying your CD. Did I just go overboard? :drill:

Re: Ideal amp to go with a podxt?

my price range is only about £150-170 . if i don't like the podxt though i will just sell it then my budget will go to about £300 for a good combo or head and cab

Re: Ideal amp to go with a podxt?

150 GBP are about 275 bucks, so amps in about a 200-250$US range....

IMO there´s nothing decent in that range, and definitely not a Head/ cab solution... a decent cab alone costs 400 bucks ;)

Re: Ideal amp to go with a podxt?

For me anyways the best i've heard PODs sound is played thru Keyboard amps.... Since PODS need a clean clear signal and full range speaker to reproduce the amp sounds in it the keyboard amp does a wonderful job. I set up my old keyboard player with a POD after he was complaining he had to lug his Fender amp to play the odd 2nd guitar tune... he loved it! I liked it a lot! In fact i'd love to buy a small and powerful keyboard amp soon so i can use different modeling fx units thru it.

A keyboard amp is meant to reproduce the keyboards sound bank sounds uneffected as possible.... clean and clear.... a pod is like a keyboards sound bank.... A guitar amp is meant to colour the sound to make a nice guitar sound.... a keyboard amp is like a mini pa..
