Ideas for Future Forum Pickups

Ok, here's the idea:

With the advent of the crazy 8, this forum has designed a custom shop pickup in a very limited amount of time, the reason being that we were unaware that we would have the opportunity to do so again. Assuming that future opportunities to design a custom shop pickup will arise again, I think it would be a good idea to develop a few ideas for future custom shop pickups. This way, we'll have a good idea of what we want well in advance, and then only after careful (or maybe not so careful) discussion and advice.

So, to get this thread started, I'll throw out a few ideas that i've heard people tossing around:

JB lite - JB without the "mid-hump" that people say it has

Beefin Demon - Screamin demon but beefier w/o the overly sharp highs

Tapped strat neck pickup - Smooth and sing-y at full bore, punchy and clucky tapped, vintage strat all the way

Tapped Strat/Tele Bridge - I remember there was a lot of hubub for this one, seemed to be a close second to the crazy 8

Brobucker Neck - A neck version to match the Brobucker in terms of output and tone, I've heard people complain that it's louder than a lot of neck humbuckers, having a matched neck version would be nice

Edit: I completely forgot about p-90's, thanks fender punk

Underwound phat cat - Zhang has often commented that the phat cat didn't sound like a true p-90, that it was wound too hot

Custom Cat - Like the P-90 custom that seymour makes in phat cat housing, rawk n' roll

Rails Cat - A phat cat w/ rails, for better string balance and to fit guitars that have unconventional string spacing

Stacked Cat - Hum-cancelling phat cat using stack technology

Phat Cat Nano (Fender Punk's idea) - s/c sized p-90

As an ending note, I would like to thank XSSIVE (I think Mike's the name) for taking the lead in setting up the polls, and hopefully this will help simplify the process for the next go round.

edit: I know it's a bit early to tell if the custom shop will do this again, and given that they don't even have to, I'm incredibly grateful that they've given the forum this opportunity once, let alone a second time, and I hope that by doing this I don't seem ungrateful or expectant in any way. I just think it would be a good idea to be ready just in case lightning strikes a third time :fingersx:

I'd like to see either a bridge or neck Strat s/c that's like the 1960 strat coils, really glassy and bell like, but with better abilities to take distortion.

Also a s/c sized P-90 sounding pup for bridge would be SWEET! Phat Cat nano anyone?

Re: Ideas for Future Forum Pickups

Sorry for the opening post, there's multiple edits there, hopefully it came out okay

Re: Ideas for Future Forum Pickups

dude, a phat cat rails? kinda cancelling each other out there!

a major part of the P90 tone is the individual bar magnets and the very wide, low coil.. it's a nice idea, but it'd end up sounding and looking like a classic stack!

Re: Ideas for Future Forum Pickups

A lot of the Strat guys have already talked about a Strat pickup for next time, if it happens again. I'm all for the next one being a single coil. We've had two humbuckers already.

My thoughts exactly, two HB's already, I think a nice Strat Bridge or even better SET! or Tele Bridge or Set would be vonderbah!!

Great idea! I'm sure it wouldn't do my pocketbook any good though! :laugh2:

Re: Ideas for Future Forum Pickups

A P-90 sized humbucker would be cool. Either that or a JB jr for tele

How bout a fat cat Rail, singular. One rail, like the old Peavy T-30 pups, those were single coil, i loved them.

Re: Ideas for Future Forum Pickups

Well my first vote was for a Strat pup. The forum trend seemed to be for a hum though so I did my best to vote for a new tonal variety. I would definitely be there if there's an opportunity for a single coil slot pup though.

Re: Ideas for Future Forum Pickups

I think the next one should be for a Strat, those guys need some love too...

Re: Ideas for Future Forum Pickups

It shurely have to be a Strat PU!It's a bucker for the 2. time ,so we need to give the Strat people the chance to create their own CS PU!

I am not going to buy one since i don't play SCs in the moment. But it can be really cool for other people!
Cheers!
