Ideas on getting rid of a spider...

Re: Ideas on getting rid of a spider...

You can skip to 8:30

A new cab is only going to make a marginal difference. There's lots better for cheap!

Re: Ideas on getting rid of a spider...

Maybe you could talk her into running it through a better cab,,,,,,,,sort-of a compromised solution.
The cab could also serve a better amp/head in the future, so it's never wasted money to get a pro-level cab.

It doesn't even have a speaker out lol

Which model Spider?

I would make a stereo recording of your band live in your practice space. If she hears it on playback, she might change her mind.

Amps can be intimidating, as can new technologies. Some people like their comfort zones. Lord knows I hear a lot of people say they can't handle all the knobs and switches on Mesa amps. Is she a technophobe?

Women hear differently than men. Men will adjust a graphic EQ with the mids scooped. A woman will almost always reverse the curve into a mild frown, lowering the bass and high treble frequencies. That might sound wrong, bad, congested, nasal, muddy, etc. to a guy.

Is money an issue? Does a better amp mean a bigger, heavier amp that she might not be able to lift or transport? What are you willing to do if these are issues for her?

You need to talk to her, without being condescending or judgmental. It will be hard. Get your point across, and then let it go. If you nag her she will dig in...and you WILL LOSE!! (Nag a guy about it and he'll probably want to punch you out!)

Good luck.

Re: Ideas on getting rid of a spider...

If you have a talk about tone, you could phrase it as a combined-band-tone issue, rather than just an individual bad tone issue. You might be able to convince her of the actual truth, that what sounds best by itself seldom sounds best when in a mix among other tones & instruments. Chances are, that Spider is capable of producing at least one or two better tones for the band's collective sound than it has been so far.

Re: Ideas on getting rid of a spider...

Hmmm, there’s a very affordable Jet City two channel tube amp in the classifieds that would blow that Spider out of the water. I bet running through it for one practice session would change her mind about the Spider. Just saying.

Re: Ideas on getting rid of a spider...

Play a bass through it and crank it to full bass and then just riff on it, you'll blow out the speaker and be done with it.

...of course you will then owe her a new (better) amp.

“Yeah, I’m really sorry about your Line 6... All I could find to replace it was this DSL40C Creamback. I hope it’s okay.”

Re: Ideas on getting rid of a spider...

Opps, didnt mean to spill that pitcher of beer on your amp and short it out... clumsy me....

Re: Ideas on getting rid of a spider...

Do women know anything about gear?

I know you are sarcastic. However, my girlfriend knows more about gear than most guitar players. She doesn't play, but she is always asking me questions about SS and tube amps, effects and different guitar styles. She knows I love to play, so she takes an interest in what I do. When we go into a music store, she is quick to point out gear she thinks I might like. Conversely, I make it a point to learn as much as possible about the things that are interest to her.

Re: Ideas on getting rid of a spider...

I bought a small Spider practice amp once for bedroom practice, bad decision, it sucked. L6 has some good products, the Helix is supposed to be great, the spiders should have been put out to pasture many moons ago.

Re: Ideas on getting rid of a spider...

This reminds me of a story.

Back in the early days of Guns N' Roses, inspired by Iron maiden and their like, Steven Adler had a double-kick setup. Unfortunately, he couldn't play double-kick to save his life, but he refused to give it up. Fortunately, he was also a complete and utter junkie with all the cognitive abilities to boot. So one day, during rehersal, the band sent him on an errand, and while he was gone, proceeded to throw his beloved second kick drum right out the window. Upon returning, Adler was bewildered and asked where his drum had gone. The band simply told him "what second kick drum? You never had one".

Slash tells that story in his book.
