Ideas please: What to install into a 1976 Gibson LP Deluxe?

Re: Ideas please: What to install into a 1976 Gibson LP Deluxe?

I did open them up for microphonics some time ago. Potted the covers, mags, and the screws and whatever I thought might be loose... By potting I mean pouring small amounts of candle wax...

Truth be told... I am confused. Because I like the guitar, I like how I can connect with it, it becoming like an extended arm you know... But then again, there is a side of me that thinks... it could be better you know.

The mag swap is the easiest and if it works that'd be GREAT.

:beerchug:

Could it be that the mag is degaussed a lot? I don't think so but maybe? That's why, while at it, am gonna order (if I can) unoriented a5's and a4's as well.

Could be degaussed because of age that's a good point and very viable. Well if you like it as-is maybe leave it be and build another guitar to better suit the tone you're after. Sometimes guitars don't cooperate with you and they are what they are so no sense in forcing them to do something they don't want to because that's time that could be spent playing it, or building/modding buying another LP.
Granted there's gonna be no real replacement for that guitar because in my opinion guitars are tonally unique to themselves and kinda hard to clone with another guitar. You can get damn close most times but there's always that something that you can't nail.
Then it's EQ tweaking from there...

I'd agree with an earlier suggestion of using a pickup booster or an EQ pedal set to your liking. So much easier and less headache in the long run. You'll get it going just stick with it.
If you do mod it I'd be interested in hearing a sound clip of it once you're done.

The degaussing due to age theory, or the old "degaussed by leaning against an amp" theory, is a myth/bunk, according to Bill Lawrence.

Re: Ideas please: What to install into a 1976 Gibson LP Deluxe?

I never knew that but Bill was very educated so I believe you wholeheartedly. I've never personally experienced it but I have heard of it happening and further assumed it was true all these years.
I never lean my stuff against an amp but I do have them all in a guitar rack that I built and they're oriented much like any other guitar rack you've seen. Still never experienced anything detrimental to my pickups.

I won't dump the guitar for sure. And I am not gonna sell the pickups, just am thinkin whether or not I should try something new to make it sound better. :scratchch

Good option but I am not a fan of DiMarzio SD. If I were to take the HB route, I think I would get a Custom Shop Duncan HB wound (a 9K #42 PAF a5) to fit a P90 soapbar housing, and keep the neck. :scratchch

The other DiMarzio is a Tone Zone... I wish they'd do a Virtual PAF in a p90 size you know... That'd be a cheap solution for me.

Another part of me says that I have enough HB's... so keeping it with minis is a good option and maybe change the mag as hamerfan suggests... The neck is ok, the bridge could definitely use more output.

That's what I am thinking at the moment, thanks guys. Getting confirmation is nice. :)

I've got a timmy, colorsound power boost clone called electric banana, Barber's B-Custom Cool hell of a clean boost ... Good suggestions, turn up the vol on the amp or boost it. That's why I feel a bit stupid for thinking about swaps and all. But cannot help it at times.

:banghead:

Thanks man, will check this out. They have small mags for deluxe minis I suppose? I gotta check the size of them...

All of the pickups I suggested are minis, there are a lot of mini humbucker options on the market. I suggest googling them.
