They choose them because they like the way they sound....just like any other artist that plays Duncan, DiMarzio, Bill Lawrence, Fralin, ect.....

i like emg's but i love duncans too
im sure james hetfield knows about guitar pickups , and it seems the majority of guitarist prefer passives , so why they chose emg's

It's stupid to label one as "better" than the other...
It's like saying blue is a better color than green...
Hell, I guess someone out there may love the Duncan Design I had on before, which I hated... But if they like it, fine, who am I to judge other peoples taste?
Anyway, the guys you mention are all about metal and emg are regarded to be THE metal pickup by many... I guess they think the sound of the emg is right for the music they wanna make?
They're definitely right for the sound I like!

EMGS are sterile. They don't sound nearly as good......
Also It's really hard to call them a pickup. :wink::doh:

Why doesn't Buddy Guy play a Randy rhoads custom V Jackson loaded with EMG's through a Mesa Boogie triple rectifier full stack?
Kirk hammett has been playing his gibsons more than his ESP's lately, and i think they dont have EMG's.

i wouldnt say that Slayer is exactly going for tone. Metallica, I dunno other than EMGs being really tight and punchy with a cleaner sound I guess that the direction they wanna go. Also remember they use the afterburner in their setups too. Lately James has been using a new array of Gibsons both in and out of the studio. Kirk as far as i know still uses his sig series from EMG. I also think endorsement deals.

I don't know... I think the bigger bands would get paid whatever brand they'd be using, so I think they can choose whatever they want and still get big bucks.
I mean, Metallica is an example of a band that every rock-kid want to copy and steal licks from these days? Wouldn't SD or dimarzio pay whatever they could to get them to use their stuff? I'm sure emg sell loads of pickups because of them, so would the other companies...

Its all about what you are using for what purpose. I made the switch from a EMG 81b to a JBb, and the differences were astounding. its all depends on what you need them for. How come no one notices that most people that do use EMG's often use marshall?

Most companies can't afford to pay artists to use their gear. Most artists only get $$$ for signature gear.....simply being endorsed by them only gets them free (or reduced cost) product, and maybe some free exposure on the manufacturers website.
Guys like Kirk Hammet don't get paid for using EMGs, but he does get paid every time they sell a KH-21 loaded pickguard. James gets f*ck all for using them.
Perhalps one of the guys that actually has an endorsement can speak up here.....
