If money didn't matter...

Re: If money didn't matter...

That is a "WOW" guitar!!! and he is an excellent player....but that is a LOT of $ for even that beautiful of a guitar. It is unique, though.

Wow... that guy definitely knows what he's doing. For a variax player, that's gotta be a dream guitar, heck just for the woods and passive pickups alone it's a ridiculously killer guitar. I've heard of these "hybrid" kinda guitars before, but I've never seen one this well done. Awesome!

Re: If money didn't matter...

Jeff Miller has documented the build of most of his guitars on his website, from the slab of maple to the finished product. His attention to detail is amazing.
If some big name company was building that guitar, you would pay at least double of what he is getting in this auction.
Of course, the resale value is not very good, but why would anyone want to sell this thing anyway? :D

It's some impressive woodwork. If he was building a guitar for me, he'd have to tone it way down, because it looks too much like a PRS version of a Hippie Sandwich, and leave off the Variax electronics.

But it's very well done. I think I saw a website documenting one of his Variax builds a few years back.

I have to agree as far as the "over the top" thing is concerned. I don't care too much for the maple binding on the neck or the maple PU rings, either.
The Variax stuff, OTOH, would be great to have in a guitar like that.

That's a really nice looking guitar!

And this is where I think Line 6 dropped the ball in a major way with the Variax'. Had they teamed with someone like Schecter and cranked them out even with veneer tops they could have killed with it.

It does my heart good to see folks get into projects like this.

Thanks for posting about it!

If they would at least sell the electronics without the guitar, so people could add the functionality to existing guitars without butchering a Variax, they would still make a killing.
Now, you can either get the circuitry out of a 300, limiting the options for the control layout, or out of a 700, which retails for over $1000. Most conversions are based on the Variax 500, which has been discontinued and is getting increasingly hard to find on the used market.
Or you could take out a 2nd mortgage and purchase an Adrian Belew Parker (~ $7,000, IIRC)
