If you had $500 at MF, you liked P-90's and it was your bday today, what would you do

Les paul Jr?

Or hold on to it and wait for November/December and hope big boy Les Pauls go on super-sale?

I guess some of that depends on what you already have. Both of those choices sound fun but what else do you own?

As an owner of both a Junior Special and a Standard P90 LE model, I would say that the Standard has more of the "runaway train" shove that we expect from a good Lester but that the simple slab is more in keeping with the P90 thang.

Although I adore Juniors, it cannot be denied that two P90s are better than one.

For $500, I would get a pre-owned singlecut PRS SE Soapbar and upgrade it with American pickups.

I have a Gibson Firebird V w/ mini hums and a Fender Standard tele.

Hoping to get something w/ P-90's as another fun addition or perhaps make the big move to a fancy Les Paul to get some true humbuckers back in the rotation.

I was just coming into suggest the PRS Soapy. I'd also suggest that it doesn't absolutely 'need' the upgrade, the factory fitted ones are not too bad at all.

Just saw this today.

Epiphone 1956 Les Paul Electric Guitar in Ebony or Metallic Gold.

Not that I know much about these, but in pretending it was me I ended up at this. I'd probably research something like this fender more myself. Price seems right as well. I can never figure out Gibson pricing as far as bang for the buck goes, it's too confusing. Plus I couldn't find that Gibson series I liked that was a 60s tribute matte-finish thing with p90s that went for around $700-800.

I'm digging on this as well, but not sure it's worth the extra $$:

I would pay the monthly bank loan.

I would save up for the Paul. If the money was burning a hole in my pocket and I couldn't cure the GAS I would go with a Fender Modern Player Jag.

Thanks everyone. Some great ideas in here! Appreciate it.

I'm leaning more and more towards holding off for a full fledged Les Paul in a few months at this point. Sounds totally snobby but I am on limited space and total number of guitars so if I am going to buy one I think I'll just go full boat over the top on my purchase instead of wondering later "well this is neat but what if I got the other version...."

Take a look at the G&L Fallout; these are getting rave reviews. They also have a budget-priced Tribute model.

And I'm very surprised that no one has mentioned an Epiphone Casino.

Take a look at G&L

Agreed. The large G&L MFD single coil does have some of the same "between a Tele and a humbucker" qualities as a P90 but they are not exactly the same. In my opinion, the MFD is more Fender-y and a P90 is, unsurprisingly, more Gibson.

NOTE: Many of the G&L Tribute series models use the exact same pickups as the US-made models.

a Fender Standard tele.

Would this be an American Standard or the MIM Standard? In either case, on recent examples, the neck position pickup cavity should be sufficiently generous to accommodate a P90. So… one pickup, one new pickguard and a pocket full of change. :)

Save up some more and get a SG Futura.

It's a Mexican standard. I like it for what it is and want something new but good idea on the pickup swap
