Today was a fun one.
Went to a good guitar store here and played a few nice guitars. This guy has some real nice equipment and is real nice to play with stuff in his store. He is the one i bought my VHT from so i can play through his VHT's which he now has in this cool downstairs room in my own privacy.
So i first started acoustically upstairs and played a few surhs. The first one i grabbed was alder, maple neck/rosewood board, vintage trem with two posts and steel saddles. Nice tone but i went for the Basswood ones he had. Sounded nicer to me. Had better 'snap' to them. I finally chose one he had which had solid steel saddles instead of the bent steel ones. Which just goes to show that you never know what you might like. ( i used to think i didnt like the solid steel ones more than the bent steel) .
Went downstairs and wailed away. I a/b'ed the Surh with the other one with bent steel saddles and liked the solid ones better. The guitar just spoke to me more. I have to say though that the bent steel sounded better with the single coils.
The suhr was pretty great, easy to play and had a nice tone to it. One gripe i had was the high notes were a bit on the shrill side. Also i wished it had an all maple neck. I am finding out that i dig all maple more than rosewood. But who knows what i might play later on?
Next i tried a couple of Heritage LP type guitars out. Can you believe i went for the super light one??! It sounded great, warm, big full sound and rich. Was warmer than the Surh especially on the high notes, but lacked playability. I just cant get used to the Les Paul thing.
What surprised me is ( and you are gonna think im a bonehead) that my Axis that i recently bought is far becoming my favorite best sounding guitar. And most comfy. I also asked the guy if i could bring a couple of my guitars in so i could have some kind of reference point in choosing something and he said no problem. So i cant wait to a/b the Axis with the Surh i liked. The Axis sounds to me that it is warmer and fuller. I gotta try em both up close. its the only way to tell.
The Surh sounded great though, played like butter and was real lightweight. Lighter than the Axis i have. Real resonant. Surh makes nice guitars man. The only thing i would change is that he should give more 'character' to the necks. I dont know. the Axis is really growing on me with the assymetrical neck it has. It is the most comfy neck by far. The Surh was great as well, thin and easy to play but lacked mojo to me.
Oh i also played a Jackson 22 fret mahogany/maple top ebony fretboard neck through body with hard tail. It kicked buttola. didnt plug it in though. gotta do that as well. Wished the neck was thicker and wasnt so wide. But it was still comfy. Kinda had that thin/wide thing goin on. But it really kicked.
Oh and did i mention that the VHT as usuall sounded awesome. I have played Mesas, Marshalls, Randalls, and some others lately and i am stuck on VHT's tone.
Fun day today!
