If you like JB, you'll like...

Re: If you like JB, you'll like...

The Antiquity JB.

I tend to find the Antiquity JB to be more of a JBJ that's been sweetening for 30 years, except that you can buy it new today.

but comparing the Ant JB to current production models, the part about "a little more expressive and the nuances in the midrange just a little more pronounced." is definitely spot on. I wonder if they wind the Ant JB on the same old Stevens winder from early on, or the same CNC winders used for the current production model JB.

Re: If you like JB, you'll like...

Wow, they're some interesting replies so far.
Manlius is a good winder, will ask for his recommendation as the soundclips are rare.
Rio Grandes seem to fall under the radar, and they're not really cheap.
I have the Screamin Demon and the alnico Nailbombs. Nope they does not seem JBish to my ears. I was surprised how much I disliked the Nailbomb in a Charvel compared to the stock JBs.

Looks like I need to get myself a Antiquity JB :)

What was it that you did not like in the BKP Nailbombs?

Re: If you like JB, you'll like...

It is a more modern aggressive sounding pickup that didn't suit what I was aiming for, which is 70s-80s rock for the Charvel. It is quite a dark pickup as well. Not JB like at all.

Right now it is in my PRS Mikael Akerfeldt which kind of complement the brightness in that guitar. If you like DD I think you will like the Nailbomb.

Re: If you like JB, you'll like...

Lol. Perhaps this thread should serve to show the subjective viewpoints from which we view pickups. The characteristics some pickups are perceived to share with JBs may be overridden by some different characteristic to the eyes and ears of another person.

What the OP wants (as it's become apparent by now) is not a pickup that's similar to the JB, but "the JB, but more". In which case, I would still recommend having a good winder rewind the JB scatterwound and replace the magnet with a rough cast a5.

Re: If you like JB, you'll like...

I think that the Alternative 8 is similar to the JB, but with a down shifted EQ curve.

This. To me Alt8 - Demon is 'more' version of JB - Jazz

Re: If you like JB, you'll like...

Which is the JBJ pickup being mentioned? The mini single sized version of it?

Re: If you like JB, you'll like...

Yikes. I can't agree any less man, as a long time user and fan of the Screamin' Demon and the JB.

The JB is much more compressed, middy and way hotter.
The Demon sounds more open, crisp and dry with a flatter EQ voicing, and it's much more dynamic.
I don't think they're even remotely similar, to be honest.
The JB is a quintessential 80s pickup while the Demon is a bit of an oddball that doesn't fall in any niche I know of.

Only pickup I've tried that felt JB-esque is the Dimarzio Breed. A bit less peaky, like a JB with the edges rounded off.
The Breed loses a bit of character because of that, but it's easier to dial in as well.

I agree with the 2nd half of dotsdad's post...great for hss. But your description of the Demon is spot on.

Re: If you like JB, you'll like...

You'll also like the Dave Mustaine set, as it contains what is essentially an active JB.

my pal has those in a custom shop Jackson. they are cool.

just put a rough cast alnico 5 in a regular JB. you're pretty much there.

that's pretty much what I did about 4 years ago when I asked MJ to do that for a Custom Shop JB. bit of scatter, rough cast magnet (which she says she prefers in her custom shop), short legs, 4-con, butyrate bobbins. at the time, some joker gave me some lip about it not being a JB if I asked for something different. part of a 2008 quote from Frank TheFalbo® found here on the forum is "the Custom Shop has probably 10 different custom pickups that they’d call “JB’s” "... a reference to different mods.

to my ear, the slight scatter made it a little more modern than the character from the JBJ or The JB Model or the Antiquity.

the JBJ a JB from the 80s (possibly early 90s) would by MJ, from when a winder's initial was added to the end of the stamped sticker on the bottom.

I found that many custom winders do as well. My go-to guy uses them exclusively because the softer tone they produce allows him to develop winds as clear-sounding as possible without being too overbearingly bright.

very much so.

it's my opinion that going with the polished A5 in pickups like the JB, while being more consistent than rough cast, they are also behind the "icepick" complaint that SO MANY people have.

Re: If you like JB, you'll like...

The Aldrich is definitely thicker than the JB. I still has great singing highs, but the there is more lows, thicker mids and a meatier sound. I have one in my CU 24 and I love it.

Re: If you like JB, you'll like...

If you like the JB you might like the Perpetual Burn and the Fender Atomic bridge.

Re: If you like JB, you'll like...

I'll add this: If you like the JB, you may also like the JB with an RCUOA5. Rough cast like Lewguitar likes, but even more mids. Little spongier bottom and rounded top.

I did forget about the Perpetual Burn... it's a pretty good hotter JB. I kind of liken it to something that has the character of the JB but with the accuracy of the Full Shred. But for me, the mere fact that the Full Shred exists means I didn't reinstall my PB into anything else... yet... but even then I'd still install a fresh Full Shred. But then that's a pretty accurate-ish sounding pickup compared to the looseness and rockiness of the JB.

Essentially I wanted a JB with more clarity and tightness at the bottom, but still drive with that similar JB singing quality.

I will give that a try!

There you go.

A scatterwound JB with an RCA5 magnet.

Do it.

Scatterwinding makes the pup sound clearer and a bit tighter. The RCA5 mitigates some of the too-hi-fi top-end that might arise from the scatterwind.
