If you only had one semi-hollow

Re: If you only had one semi-hollow

Seeing Clapton in his early 20's in Cream getting great tones from his 335 and several stacks of Marshalls, went a long way towards dispelling my stupid idea that 335's were 'old man' guitars.

Yeah, well my idols played stuff like this...

Grey thinning hair and a middle age figure. No guitar is going to make up for that and become a fountain of youth. If you think a 'cool' modern guitar is going to make a baby boomer look young and hip, you need to talk to some of the young women in the audience. They'll clear that up pretty quickly.

They don't wanna "talk" :D

Re: If you only had one semi-hollow

I think it is all in the kind of music you play- a 335 didn't look 'old' when John McLaughlin was playing one, or Steve Howe (347). Plus, the way they are designed, you can really fly all over that fingerboard.

Don't forget this guy --

Although I think he probably technically is a grandpa himself now.

Re: If you only had one semi-hollow

Between these two I would take the 335. Ideally I would like a 355. A PRS SC-J would be very welcome too.

So far I have a hollow 59RI ES-330 and the semi hollow Thinline I assembled in 2008, both keepers.

Well, he carries it off really well. I will say I'm a huge fan of Mr. Lee :bigthumb:

Re: If you only had one semi-hollow

335 no contest, a thinline tele isn't a true semi to me, it's a solid body where somebody's gone to town with a router

Which is pretty much how they came to be. Fender started off trying to make Teles lighter, so they made the so called "Smuggler's Telecaster" (pretty rare, by the way). Basically routed out everything under the pickguard, then said "eh, might as well" and hollowed the rest of the body out.

Ugh, the Hollowbody 2 is insanity. It's looks like a violin with frets. I really like the PRS Super Eagle that John Mayer's playing with Dead & Company these days.
