If you try another manufacturer's pickups, is it cheating?

Re: If you try another manufacturer's pickups, is it cheating?

Well. If they were D'Marzios, I would say, definitely yes. This one's tricky. Might want to check with Bill Clinton :laugh2:

I would say "trying" another manufacturer's pickups would not be considered cheating. It's only by comparing other brands of pickups that you can reach the conclusion that Duncan's are tonally superior, hands down.

Now if you "purchase" another brand of pickups, it probably means that you're just going through a mid-life crises & are not currently in touch with reality. You'll be back to your old self again & realize you shouldn't have sold the mini-van for that Harley, told your boss to take a hike, & cheated on your true love by purchasing another manufacturer's pickups. :D

When a manufacturer considers selling only to me, I'll consider buying only from them. Until them, we're all better off under the rules of competition. And, boy, let me tell you, those Clinton jokes never get old.

I don't think of Jason as being competition for SD since he markets to entirely different customers. Now if it was Larry DiMarzio you were talking about, you should wash your mouth out with soap... Larry's patents and lawsuits leave a bad taste in everybody's mouth! :(

I have to erase thoose DM from my sig!!! :burnout: :newangel:

I am very surprised and disappointed! I wouldn't think an administrator on this board would post such a purposefully baiting subject. One without elaboration. I would expect it from some teenage wanker who wants to start a holly war. You can already see that gross generalizations are abounding.

Why would DiMarzio's patents leave a sour taste in anyones mouth? Because of the double cream pickup thing?...please. It's not 1976 anymore. :arg:

:saeek: :grumble: Scott! How could you?!?!?!?!? I hereby demand a meeting of the forum brethren to discuss whether you should be :banned: or at least :censored:

Then again, I like the Dimarzio designed pups in my Nitefly. And the ESP pups in my bass are cool. My dad has a Strat with Van Zandt pups (way cool).

There is a local luthier who will custom-wind pups (melancon guitars), and the PAF's I heard were outstanding.

Then there's LesStrat...SD all the way!

It doesn't matter what year it is. Those trademarks (not patents) are not deserved by DiMarzio. Its common knowledge they were not the first. They found the needle in court so its legal but it ain't right.

I was referring to the lawsuit which basically made it illegal for Chris Kinman to market his pickups here in the US (at least until he redesigned them a bit):

Speaking of Double Cream bobbins, that is exactly what I found when I removed the covers from my Seth Lover pickups... would I get a reward if I turned Seymour in?

Re: If you try another manufacturer's pickups, is it cheating?

if you just try the maker and this its ok then thats ok with me.........(its like peck kissing a chick that isnt your girl friend: no harm no foul) but if you if like them and keep buying more of them and use them then yes, that sir is cheating.....now if they happen to be Dimarzio's that you try, like, and continue to play and enjoy...........that my friend IS AN AFFAIR!!!!!!!!!! :laugh2:

I vote you should be stripped of one Administrator's star per infidel pickup you tried. Preferably in a humiliating public ceremony at User Group Day. Photos to be posted here of course. :nono:

LOL! Haha. :newangel:

Snowdog, I'll assume you are just yanking my chain in return.

In case you are not, with only 100 posts here, I'm guessing you don't have a clue as to my personality and the way I love to screw around and have fun.

One of the pleasures of being an Admin here is that we don't get censored or asked to follow a certain company line.

Most likely, this thread should have been posted in Off Topic. As you can see, no Holy War has begun. No Jihadists lurking in shadows. It's all good.

Now onto the Lollars. I tried them, liked them. They are rather unique. Not like any other P90 I've tried. It must have something to do with how he builds them without the baseplate and all.

I wanted to try one because I'm going to try to wind my own version at the UGD. Jason's A5 P90s are supposed to be some of the best out there. I want to wind one that comes close. Can't do that if I don't know how his sound.

Very articulate, bright and punchy. Very much Alnico 5.

I had a set of Duncan Hot and Custom in a Guild Blues 90. I've got two Ceramic Duncans in my Godin. The Lollar sounds lke a cross between the Duncan Hot and Custom.

I still prefer the Antiquities though as they are smoother and fuller if that makes sense.

But, I figured I'd get a fair share of razzing if I posted this and you guys will be allowed to flog me with tequila shots next week at UGD! Woohoo!

Re: If you try another manufacturer's pickups, is it cheating?

I think, that as a penance, you should wind your pickup at the UGD, and then send it to me!!! It's the same as going cold turkey. You'll feel much better for it afterwards! Then you'll realise the errors of your ways, and can continue guilt free! :-)
