I used to post here all the time but its been years. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up. I work at Guitarmart and we just got word that fender is going to be doing a 30-40% increase of MAP down the line from americans to mexicans. So if you plan on buying a fender I suggest you bite the bullet and do it now before you not only have to pay too much...but way too much. Be safe. And try the new mexi stds. very nice.

Mike, which GC do you work at? I used to work at the Glen Burnie GC. based on the avg income of the regular customers there, combined with the no discounts on the tagged price policy, that store is going to be hurting. the Mexi Fenders were one of the best sellers but with a 30% price increase . . .

Fender also requires all dealers to up-mark existing stock.

Myself, I refuse to participate in or support blackmail of this kind. I certainly won't run and reward them by buying a new Strat right now before Feb 1. Do they think I'm an idiot?

It's happening on February 1. The internet has been abuzz about it for quite a while.

This is the first time I've heard the amount quoted as high as 40%, though. Most reports cap out at 30%, but state that specific increases will vary from model to model.

I guess maybe that Music Man I've been eying may be an easier choice next time I am ready to buy a new axe..... So the four American Fenders I already own will have a higher resale value as a result?

Sounds like a lot of partcaster will be built. Warmoth is going to be busy.
Didn't Gibson just do this also? When are the big companies going to wake up and smell the coffee? I am not going pay these prices, I will buy used.

It's in effect right now, as my bassist went to get a 70s classic jazz bass, and he got the last one at the store at old prices. He got it for 700$, he was told under the new price it would of been 950$.

You buy used from the guys who buy new. That's fine with Fender.

Few people do Warmoth or USACG. Asian makers are the major competition.

Fender has (obviously) figured that those insane enough to pay for American made instruments instead of Asian ones have already decided that money isn't a big object for them. Since these people have money they probably value things that stay stable in value (they obviously did for real estate and the like). The best way to ensure good resell value for Fender guitars is raising prices on new Fender guitars. So it's in the best interest of the customer. Or something.

I can't help thinking about Leo's original goal: make the **** thing cheap. Now we pay what, $1300 or $1400 for the base American Stratocaster, which is made of alder (before Leo only used to make paper), has the neck screwed on with a power drill and has the whole electronics assembly premade on a plastic board that gets slapped on.

They kept the American Strat and Tele under $1,000 for a long time. I guess now they're ready to break the barrier.

They've bought Guild, Gretsch, Jackson... did I miss anyone? You'd hope that would allow them to offer a greater variety of guitars and keep prices affordable .

They can kiss it. I have built many guitars and will again as needed.

Well, MAP refers to advertised prices. I'd imagine that you'll be able to find reasonable pricing in-store or over-the-phone inquiries. If they are raising MSRP as well then that's another issue as far as price-protected items, although retailers still play games there as well. Another unfluential issue would be with regard to dealer cost (which I imagine has gone up as well), but most dealers don't share that information with employees. Until very recently I was a sales rep in tthe SCUBA industry for a couple of dive gear manufacturers (one of them being part of the "Big Three") and alot of the same issues are happening between the two fields going by the discussions i've had recently with a local brick & mortar music store owner.

Cost of commodities are rising, which leads to higher production costs, which leads to higher prices for dealers, and then finally translates to higher MAP's and higher MSRP's to help everybody maintain some kind of operating margin. With the drop-off in sales across the board i'd bet anything you'll find dealers who will abide by MAP but will be willing to give you "deals" regardless (especially at the box stores such as Guitar Center that get better pricing for volume purchases). Nobody is going to turn away business right now if they don't have to. And if it means violating an MSRP policy then they'll absolutely do it. Guitar manufacturers have zero leverage right now with regard to their pricing policies. Companies like Gibson and Fender can't afford to bust the balls of Guitar Center or Sam Ash right now and hold their feet to the fire for in-store pricing violations and burn those bridges because if they lose that business they know **** well the brick & mortar guys won't be able to pick up the slack right now or any time soon. They'll do what the companies I worked for do......simply look the other way and pay a bunch of meaningless lip service to the brick & mortar guys along the way who can't possibly match the prices of the Big Box and stay in business.

What a bummer.

And I though $1000 MIM "Road Worn" candyass relics were the sign of the apocalypse.

it is a bummer, but they have kept the same pricing a long time, i dont have it in front of me but my 99 AM std strat was in the 900range, and that was 10years ago!

Does it apply to Jacksons as well then? I'm not planning on ever buying a brand new guitar again, just interested since I like Jacksons a lot and Fender owns 'em.
