If you want to buy a new Fender...important info

Re: If you want to buy a new Fender...important info

Can you say CARVIN? They are built in the USA too!

I am getting to the point where the famous Fender name means beans.

Re: If you want to buy a new Fender...important info

What a bummer.

And I though $1000 MIM "Road Worn" candyass relics were the sign of the apocalypse.

LOL. I played one of them the other day and it felt and played better than half the MIA strats in the store. Didnt bother plugging it in though.

Re: If you want to buy a new Fender...important info

If I didn't have such an obsession with CBS headstocks I would have bought a G&L and not a Highway 1 Strat. For my Tele I'm looking into G&Ls anyway, although their Tele models are less common here.

Fender has just made G&L and Warmoth a better option and they've made Suhr and Anderson seem affordable.... :smack:

Re: If you want to buy a new Fender...important info

Cost of commodities are rising, which leads to higher production costs, which leads to higher prices for dealers, and then finally translates to higher MAP's and higher MSRP's to help everybody maintain some kind of operating margin.

Commodity prices are not rising with only a few exceptions. I highly doubt the price of the wood that Fender uses is rising, and the price of the metals for the parts has been falling for awhile. Unless Fender starts using some pretty thick gold coating on their hardware commodity prices won't be an excuse. Gas prices are also at their lowest in years, so shipping the guitars and parts is also cheaper.

Re: If you want to buy a new Fender...important info

Great news in my book! Why ? Because I've just bought a few new Fenders this year and while I dont buy for an investment or to resale, its pretty nice if the Jag Bass I bought for $600 (on sale mind you) and that normally sells for $750 I belive, will now be going for $900.

Why ? Because if want to sell it I can get more than I paid for it. Who doesn't like that right ? lol

Same it sounds for the MIM Tele and Highway 1 strat.

My car drops value every month I drive it, my 2 year old PC is next to worthless, my house isn't worth what it was 2 years ago either.

At least my guitars can keep value due to price increases.

I wouldn't count on it too much.

Sure, the guitar market kept stable during the crisis so far. But that's because people don't trust stock and banks and look for something halfway stable to put money in.

But that doesn't change the fact that the market is absolutely saturated with used guitars. The number of guitars made and imported during 2006, 2007 and 2008 alone is probably more than you have actual players.

The problem is very simple: people put money into the "guitar market" because it is stable and most other possible investments suck right now. But that is artificial stability. There is no actual need for a guitar, much less a particularly good one. A market that has been driven up purely by itself is very fragile. If there is a hickup and values drop, then there is nothing at all stopping the downturn.

Now, I don't think there's anything wrong with being happy that your $1000 Fender will still be $1000 next year. But buying non-perfect vintage guitars and other stupid thing that people are doing is not going to end up pretty.

Re: If you want to buy a new Fender...important info

so you're saying if i want that nice shiny custom piece at the old price, i best get my tail in gear?

Re: If you want to buy a new Fender...important info

Will this up the re-sell value of my '04 MIM Tele? Not that I plan to sell it, but just curious of it's worth.

Re: If you want to buy a new Fender...important info

it is a bummer, but they have kept the same pricing a long time, i dont have it in front of me but my 99 AM std strat was in the 900range, and that was 10years ago!

All that proves is how badly they were screwing people back then.

I get that until recently costs have been rising, but 30%? I don't think so.

Re: If you want to buy a new Fender...important info

This price increase was partial inspiration for my buying a jazzmaster now. I bought used, but you know it won't take long for the used market to adjust upwards. Based on the reported new prices for similar US models, I'm guessing the AVRI JMs are gonna jump to something like $1800.

Re: If you want to buy a new Fender...important info

That's a brilliant move with the economy in the crapper...

that about sums it up

just about every store is advertising sale prices now, and I'm not talkin' about just the perennial "GC Holiday sale".

Re: If you want to buy a new Fender...important info

If this was about Gibson, this thread would be 10 pages by now....lol....go figure...

+1. Foreclosures, layoffs, recession, banks failing. Everyone else in the country is dropping prices to be able to sell anything at all. Raising prices now will kill sales. Good plan. The guy's that came up with this, were they the same ones behind the "New Coke" fiasco?

From what little I know, this is supposed to be in response to Fenders having less markup between cost and MAP compared to other makes. Can anyone confirm if this increase is MAP only or is the cost going up?

Re: If you want to buy a new Fender...important info

You know, I always wanted at least one Fender Strat one day, an American Deluxe Strat (I'm not a big strat fan, but something about the American Deluxe and the way it looks always captured me).
But I sure as hell wont bother buying anything brand new from Fender ever now.
I think I'd save up and go for a cool Suhr Custom Classic down the road instead.

Re: If you want to buy a new Fender...important info

They are going for the collectors market... that's why they insist on relics and vintage correct guitars. Fender prefers exact reissues on creativity, innovation and comfort.

What better way to tell a collector that your instruments won't loose value then to mark up the prices? :scratchch

Leo Fender, the man, had built the company on lower priced instruments and focused on creativity, innovation and comfort. Fender today are doing exactly the opposite.

Right, and everyone else is going in the opposite direction, giving up some of their traditional markup in order to attract the few buyers that are out there now. This is the wrong time to get into the "let's jack the price up for the fun of it" game. Gibson did it early & caught the market on a big upswing . Fender missed that and waited until the bottom fell out of the economy...Leo would be turning in his grave. Not only at the blatant greed & stupidity being perpetuated in his name, but also because the whole idea behind his guitars was to make them affordable for everybody. You know, most of America's problems are self-inflicted.

Who would that be?

Fender, Ibanez, ESP, and Gibson all announced significant price increases.

Lol, this is very true. I'll admit I would probably responsible for a number of those posts, but a good observation indeed.
