I'll take my lumps

but, I am very dissapointed in the P-rails I installed a couple of months ago. Yeah, it sounds ok I guess, but there is so little difference between the three options that I hava a hard time telling them apart other than on a clean setting with no effects. And the noise! sheesh. Trust me when I say it is wired and grounded correctly, I even went back and re-grounded everything twice, but to no avail. The P90 sound is the better of the three, but honestly doesn't stand up to the miriad different PUP's I have in my other guitars, Dimarzio or Duncans (I have sixteen different ones) I have a set of the SH4-SH2 humbuckers and they sound fantastic along with various Duncan twin rail singles that all sound great, and no noise unless I tap them, and even then way less than the P-Rails. I did my best to like it, but it will be on the 'bay shortly. Hope I didn't offend anyone.

Not all things for all people...at least you tried them instead of just slamming them by what you'd read on the antiwebz or something.

Re: I'll take my lumps

I put the P-Rails in a Schecter S-1 30th Anniversiary Model, which resembles an SG.
I have so many different HBs in other guitars, I figured why not get 21 different tonal options from a P-Rails set with double toggle switches?
I agree that they are noisy in SC or P-90 mode. Some players want the "hum" to replicate the true sound of Vintage SCs, while some players would rather keep the tone and boot the hum. I found the HB and P-90 modes to be very useable, very good sounding in certain positions/toggle combinations, but the Rail SC was weak, brittle, and noisy. Not very good......
I can only use the Rail SC modes when I'm playing clean, but dirty, I found the other 2 modes very nice.......As usual, it all goes into each player's personal tonal opinion, which are extremley varied it seems....it also could be the guitar and amp/amp settings......
With all the different guitars, amplifiers, and sets of ears, it's very difficult to go on other's reviews, unless they use the same gear as you.......Anyways, thanks for posting your thoughts on the P-Rails. I did a review the day after I installed mine. Here's the guitar in case you want a gander..............

Re: I'll take my lumps

You dont have to like every pickup. If it does not work for your ears then let them go.

Might be nice to try the trading post here though before going on the bay.

Re: I'll take my lumps

I've been debating whether I should make this same post!!! I recently put a set of P-Rails into my 25+ yr old Hondo (LP copy basically, just thinner) and had the same results. Clean, meaning pristine clean, the character of each coil/mode rings clear and I am, well I think I am anyway, happy. Add even the slighest bit of gain/drive and that distinction quickly fades away. By the time I reach a solid crunch tone the series mode, single rail and P-90 are indistinguishable from each other. I was so excited over the tonal possibilities these pups offered and so far I am very disappointed and the $300 investment hasn't even sunk in yet either

So many other people have posted about positive results in a plethora of different style guitars and woods and this Hondo is no different than any other LP import copy that I was confident this would be a good match.

Never hold back. As long as your review is honest and not inflammatory I don't think anyone would take issue. Screw them if they do. I'd like to see all opinions on products not just glowing reviews.

Re: I'll take my lumps

Don't get me wrong, I think Duncan pickups are great. Wouldn't it be nice if you were able to have a chance to install and test drive as many of the different pickup options as you wanted in your own guitar(s) with your own personal rig and be able to find THE pickup or combo that would make your hair curl! They should have a contest like that. You win a trip to the shop, and a crowd of techs are at your call, setting up anything you want, any way you want for a day. Hell, it would even include a drummer, bass and backup guitar players to really go nuts!! Ouch, I just hurt the dream section of my brain.
