I'm almost finished making this!

This will radius necks and separate fingerboards with radius's of just under 7" up to just over 20" and a variety of conical/compound radius's.
I am setting it up to cut a conical radius of 10" at the nut, 14" at the 12th, and 16" at the 24th on a 25.5" scale length. This will require the bridge saddles to have a radius of 18", which can be achieved on an OFR and Gotoh FR by shimming some of the saddles.

I am working on the designs of the items that will locate and hold the neck in place. These will attach to the plate that is bolted to the top of the table by the 8 1/4-20 cap screws. This plate will be removable with all of its attachments in place so it can be replaced by a different one that is set up for a different style neck.

(No Milling machines, Lathes, Table saws, Computers or Synthesizers were used in the designing or manufacturing of this Machine)

I will keep you updated about the finishing and use of this.
I am STOKED! John

Re: I'm almost finished making this!

Thank you guys!
Most of it is built out of 3/4" 13 ply Baltic Birch plywood. There is a little bit of Maple and one little piece of Black Walnut.
Raph, I knew what I wanted it to do........then I just thought it up.

You're a magician.

Re: I'm almost finished making this!

Nice rig you've built there man. Going to be cool to see what you build with it.

Re: I'm almost finished making this!

You starting a shop???

Thats quite the machine there!
I do congratulate you, hopefully it will be working a lot in the future.

Re: I'm almost finished making this!

awesome man, you will be able to change necks the same frequency you will be changing strings

Re: I'm almost finished making this!

Once again, Thank You, It means a lot!
I love designing and building things. I get an idea and then I do some very (extremely very) crude sketches of the idea. A lot of times I'll do a crude mockup using cardboard, sticks and what ever to help me see it better spacialy and to see how it might move. That is something I didn't do with the other idea I tried a wile back. OOPS. A lot of times the finished tool or machine looks a lot different then what I initially pictured to begin with.
I plan to build for more than just myself. That is one of the reasons I have been doing every thing on my "Forever Lasting Build" LOL, with fixtures, jigs, templates and machines that I have been designing and building.
Hopefully I wont have to work all day tomorrow, so I can do some more work on it. I am hoping to use it before the end of the week.
Thank you. John

Re: I'm almost finished making this!

Well, it is finely finished, and has been used with great success! It took a bit to get it adjusted/dialed in, but all par for the coarse.
I radiused the neck for the build I have been working on since FOREVER. It cut a conical radius of 10" at the nut, 14" at the 12th fret, and 16" at the 24th fret.
The clamps work better than I had anticipated, so now I have 2 dents to steam out on the bass side of the neck, oops.

Now I need to shape the back, final shape the FB, fret, cut the nut shelf, final thickness/scoop the peghead, and apply the finish.
Then sand and finish the body.
Hope you like, John

Re: I'm almost finished making this!

Amazing! And they say we Americans don't build things anymore.

Re: I'm almost finished making this!

Thank you all!
It is a relief to finally have it finished and to have used it. It has been a major hold up in the building of the guitar. It seemed every time I planned on having a day off to work on it I would get a service call or the project I was working on demanded that I work another day, even though I had been on over time already for some time. Some times a project taking longer can be a good thing. Taking a break from something and then coming back to it can help you get a different perspective on it.
I have been a little slow lately. Week before last I only got 7 hours in, which was just fine with me, because I was able to work on the radiusing machine. I probably worked on it 50 hours that week.
The FB is Bocote as is the stripe down the center with VG Maple being the rest of it.
