Im buliding myself a new cab!

Well, i decided to bulid a new cab for my Celestion Centuries... well, this cab is gonna ROCK! Im building it from 1 inch cardboard (the same stuff used when buliding floors in houses), and well, this cab is gonna be HUGE! About as big as my refrigerator, about 240 cubic liters (im sure you could calculate how many cu.ft. it is).

The first cab i bulit was way too small for my tastes, just about room for 2 x 12", not deep at all. But this one, hey hey!

By the way you experienced cab buliders out there: should i paint the cab before or after i put in\on the speakers, wheels, handles and such?

Hehe, when i said "my" car i meant my mothers car ;). But it belongs to my family, rigth?

And oh, you have to be 16 to drive together with parents (practice driving), and 18 to take a license ;).

EDIT: That doesn't mean i haven't been driving, hehe :rolleyes: , i once had 70 mph down the road in my mothers Ford scorpio :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

I made some 2x12 cabs out of MDF and they were too heavy to lift even without the speakers so i bought a Mashall cab instead.....

Well, i just weighed my 2x12: it weighs 115 pounds!!! (60KG)!!! That's excactly the same as my weigth, lol :smack: :smack: :smack:

And oh, i suppose there's a reason why Marshall cabs are so ligth.... flimsy construction that makes it resonate like a drum shell :D. This cab is gonna be about as resonant as a rock....... just too bad it weighs the same :P

When you said cardboard, I automatically thought about what we call cardboard over here - the stuff boxes are made of.

I guess you wouldn't have a weight problem then. :D

Particle board is a VERY heavy material. Particle board isn't a very musical material, either. I tend to stay away from particle board, OSB, low grade plywoods, hardboard. None are great for speaker enclosures.

The #1 musical choice, IMO, is 3/4” birch plywood. It’s expensive (~$50 US for a 48” x 96” sheet – more than enough to build a cab). Second would be MDF (doesn’t resonate like birch, but is easy to work with and is a bit lighter. Also stiff, so internal bracing can be held to a minumum).

I guess that’s all moot point if you’ve already bought the material. Also remember that box material is only a small piece of the pie when it comes to the character of a cabinet. Box size and design play a larger role than does the material, so long as the material isn’t “flapping” around. IMO, Marshall cabs might be in need of a little extra internal bracing, otherwise, they are adequately strong.

PS - particle board isn't used, at least in the US, as sub floor. You've likely got either OSB or a low grade plywood sheathing. Or, you've just mistaken particle board as a sub floor material ;)

I have another question BTW: Do you think i should use some kind of dampening\padding inside the cab to reduce resonances, or not?

I like the sound of the Marshall and was surprised to see that it was indeed made of Particle Board! But that little 1912 Marshall cab really can kick and can be carried to any gig so i'm not complaining..... Wish the 5150 head i use with it was as light. I looked at a bunch of my amps when thinking about making home made cabs..... My 5150 cab is plywood, but a type you can not buy at local hardware stores... My 65 Deluxe amp was thin PlyWood.... some of my other newer Fenders were particle board....... But then i found that solid real wood could be used and i think i'll try that next..... I heard that Pine with no knots in it can sound great!

I dunno, I've just never heard "resonant as a rock" being used as a positive in a musical term before. :laugh2:

hell, im gonna go chisel me a guitar outta a stone and see how that sounds... :dance:
