I'm in the studio over the next month. Please give me some advice.

Future Music Magazine Oct. 2005 has a very good drum article on getting the Bonham sound on your laptop/daw. Maybe see if you can still get that issue as it's all about drums.

Hey.

Well here's an example of one of the beds.
This is the sound we have to work with. Bear in mind - everything is dry here. In my opinion the kick drum and the snare must be fattened up.

Okay, I listened to the clips...in my professional opinion the Bonham sound is not what you need on that track. You're dead on about the fat and warmth. This is an organic sounding track and it calls for a more natural sound drum mix, listen to U2's "All Because Of You" it has power and warmth, also some Tom Petty would be a good choice for some ideas. I wouldn't gate the kit much if any - I would also "mult" the entire kit to a compressor and leave the original tracks with little or no compression, the multed tracks can be brought in underneath the originals to taste to give power and shore up the drum mix.

Also listen to U2's "Electrical Storm" the William Orbit mix, nice drums on that for the style.

Thankfully it doesn't sound like Lars Ulrich's tincan kit. :laugh2:

Thanks a lot man. I know what you mean
I'm listening to the U2 right now, and the drummer is over at my place. I'll see what he thinks about the multing idea and the drum sound. Thanks!

Cheers!

It's all about getting what you have to sound the best it can, let's face it most of us don't have the budget of U2 or Tom Petty to make a record but you don't need it to make a successful recording.

Nor do most people have such well equipped studios & great sounding spaces in their own homes let alone access to 'em anywhere else.

The kick & snare on that clip have plenty of attack to 'em...pretty much the opposite of anything Zep. I don't think I get the reference either...Everything sounded ok. I'd run the drums out to a SansAmp or some kind of dist box for "warmth" & the body...add some character to the sound.
