Anyone got the 411 on the vintage drum tip?
Lookin' at Gretsch, Rogers, Slingerland, trixon etc...

Anyone got some do's or don't, or what to look for?

I'm not that much of a drummer, but I want a nyce vintage set for my studio, especially so drummers can come to do a session w/ out bringin' drums. I very much prefer the drum sounds of the 60's, so that's why I'm lookin' at vintage. Vintage stuff also makes me moist.

My friend owns a totally original vintage Slingerland from the 60's. That thing really sounds unlike any other set I've heard. I really can't tell ya much about it but if you find a Slingerland I'd go for it.

I'd look into Ludwig, also. They used to be huge back in the day.

My pops played guitar and drums throughout the 60s and he was always really fond of Rogers and Slingerland. He played the Rogers longer than anything IIRC. I would love to see an old set of Roger in person. They had a set at the local Music Go Round a while back that looked pretty darn rough!! Keep me posted this really interests me.

NOTHING tops a vintage Slingerland. Wicked, wicked sets.

EDIT: Plus, the old slingerland's had some crazy huge bass drum sound, due to the size.

Yeah the kick drum on my friends is just freakin perfect. I mean it sounds like its already mic'd up.

Thnx doods! Yeah, I'm lucky to have a place that specializes in vintage drums not too far from me. I'm lookin' at a Slingerland or 2. I just gotta sell some of the stuff I'm tryin' to sell 1st.

Funny thing, the orchestral/marching bass drum that I have at school & the kiddies use is a vintage Gretsch.

Check the bearing edges thoroughly. If there is a dent in the edge, or if its too round, it will become a big problem.

can u explain this? I'm drum terminology challenged.

Again, I can't help much, but I offer one word from my drummer - "Ludwig."

He plays a classic maple Ludwig kit pieced together from Ebay with drums dating from the '70s to 2004. Our guitarist has a '71 Ludwig set that's a very nice piece. It's maple, sparkly gold, and sounds pretty decent.

Re: I'm Lookin' Into Buyin' A Vintage Drum Set & I Need Tips

well, i dont know anything about drums outside of the need-to-know basis, but the drummer i know went absolutely batshyt over a (rather small - bass, snare, 1 hi tom) ludwig set, which i thought was terribly overpriced.. now i know why.

my advice (for what its worth) bring a drummer with you (dont need to say, one that knows his stuff), set him in front of the sets in question, then buy the one, where he drooled the most

Ludwig. Ludwig. Ludwig.

I have a 5-piece set of Ludwig Standard(s) with the black "Beatles swirl." I bought them used in either '79 or '80. Sadly, they've been stacked in a corner for quite some time. No room to set them up, and the wife can't stand the noise (even with practice pads on them). Hopefully we'll get the house she wants, and I'll have a music room.:D

Great drums. I also have the original Speed King bass drum pedal.

I would personally look into a Ludwig kit for the vintage style drums. Especially look for a Ludwig Supraphonic snare, that is the most recorded snare drum in the 60's & 70's. You can find some really nice ones used, or you can purchase one brand new as they re-issued the series. :)

Re: I'm Lookin' Into Buyin' A Vintage Drum Set & I Need Tips

The only thing I know about vintage drums is... The hareware stinks. Get modern stands. I took one of my hard hitting drummer's to a open blue's jam. There was a vintage kit there. He broke the snare stand and spent the rest of the night chasing the kick drum. I had to keep my foot against it from walking.:smack:

thnx to everyone for chimin' in. I'm gettin' closer to makin' a purchase as I've began sellin' some of my vintage BMX goodies that i've been hording.

Re: I'm Lookin' Into Buyin' A Vintage Drum Set & I Need Tips

FWIW, a drummer I know has a Gretsch set (it's new & cherry I think) and it sounds really good.

Re: I'm Lookin' Into Buyin' A Vintage Drum Set & I Need Tips

Some of the most "vintage" sounding kits aren't vintage at all. For 'vintage' sound & feel, at least 60% of it comes from head choice, tuning, microphones and where they're placed...and finally, how the guy actually hits the kit.

I dunno man, I'd look into some new kits before dropping stoopid money on an old kit just for the sake of having an old kit...with it's rattling & rusted hardware, loose plys, and more limited tuning range. I'd hunt around for a used Slingerland or Noble & Cooley kit. Maybe even some "off-brand" custom stuff like Spaun, Pork Pie, or maybe a smaller builder. I just cut some tracks with a guy who's got one of these stack kits; http://themoderndrumshop.com/stacksets.html it sounds really "vintage" to me...think Keith Moon & Ginger which is more the guys playing then anything else...Bonhom was a WHOLE different school.

I'd also really think about getting a new kit built by the guys at Precision Drum in NY; http://www.precisiondrum.com/ The honest truth is that most of the higher end new kits you see are made with Keller shells and are "constructed & assembled" by DW, Spaun, GMS etc. You know those "new vintage" Ludwig kits that you see on the road with guys like Bun E. Carlos & Ringo's All Star Band? They're actually built by Precision Drum from Keller Shells & finished with the "brand name" hardware for the touring artists. Basically ANYBODY can buy the parts, get some predrilled shells and slap a kit together, kinda like a Telemecaster...but as we ALL know there's a BIG difference between 'em...not all Keller kits are created the same.

But personally...if it were me who was about to spend $1500 or so on a kit...I'd hunt around for used gear...even mis-matched toms can be cool if they all kinda sound like 'a family' rather then seperate drums.
