Hey guys. I don't want to pay 2,999 CAD for a Plexi re-issue. I acutally want a real plexi head. Could you please let me know if the below deals are good amps?

Also could you please tell me if the Re-issue plexi sounds the same as the real deal from the 60s and 70s?

Are there any particular type of plexi that I have to stay away from. My budget would be around 1500 US (must be excellent condition for that price)

-Im not sure at all what to make of that first amp...

-The second one is a late 70's JMP 1959, it is not a Plexi but the circut is close in a lot of ways but not the same.

-The 3rd one is a reissue 50 watt Plexi

-The 4th one is a real '67 Super Bass, it is very close to a 1959 Super Lead but it is tuned for bass, great amp and it looks real good to be that old. I would expect tht amp to bring at least 5k, maybe more seeing that it's a Bass head and so clean.

-The 5th one is pretty much the same deal as the 2nd one...very close to Plexi but it is a later amp, and while the 2nd amp you listed in a 100 watt this one is a 50 watter.

-The last one yo listed in the same as the first one...

As for Silver Jubalies they are really nothing like a Plexi. Bogners are really their own beast but most of them do a nice plexi'sh type tone if you want them to...

Hey man. I'm after "Runnin' with the Devil".

I play classic rock exclusively, and both of my bands are classic rock style music.

Both of my bands also are very very loud. I need to cut through whether I'm playing a strat, les paul or telecaster. Also would be good to be able to finally shred and get that tight lead sound. I can't get that sound with a blues junior.

Well, you're gonna be chasin the Brown Sound no matter what Marshall you buy...it's not just the Marshall, that said a Plexi is a good place to start, Ed used a 100 watt not that im saying you need that kind of power.

Whats wrong with buying a reissue? Also, what kind of budget do you have to work with?

if you get an older amp, be prepared to factor in extra cash for repairs/wear-and-tear

on a good note Marshall has dropped their prices 30% across the board on their amps in Canada.... that means a huge savings on the Plexi Reissues!!!! all the 2000 series are now within my reach!!!

I'm not just after the brown sound. That was just an example. But that sound is a great example of a lead tone that I would like to get.

Thats pretty good news WhoFan. Maybe I could find a used re-issue somewhere. I just don't wanna pay 3500 CAD for just the head after the taxes.

I have to try a JCM 2000 (DSL) maybe i'll like it...

Whats the best 2000 series amp for classic rock? I'd probably get one of these new if anything with warranty.

The reason why I'm talking about so many different amps here is because I believe that tone is a product of hands, not gear. So I just need a big loud gigging marshall. Preferrably 100 watts.

Get that plexi bass head and an OD pedal. You'll have the tone you want, dude.

For cleans, you can roll the volume on your guitar back. For rhythm, crank the volume on your guitar. And for lead, use a transparent OD pedal.

If you want the hot rodded Marshall tone, 3 channels including clean, brown sound + all the classic rock sounds you can think of, the Quick Rod is the amp for you. I live about 30 minutes from Scott's shop, and he builds top quality stuff across the board.

Hey guys what do you think about the blonde plexi i just posted above? I really need to know if this is a winner. If you guys tell me to go ahead, I'm pulling the trigger on it.

I have a JCM200 DSL50 and It's a Very versatile, It can definitly get you the brown sound if you know how to tweak her right (and can play the crazily too :laugh2: )
I'm just back from a gig now with it and I had been trying out my new POD XTL through the PA for the last few days here at home at gig volume, and as soon as I plugged into the DSL I was yet again transported to tone heaven.
Fantastic sounding amp and will do anythin from Fendery cleans to any knopfler to Cream to sabbath to Lizzy to Floyd to Van Halen! and anything in between!

I see a JCM2000 half stack for sale in the area right now for 1500 (head and 1960 cab). I could get that, or I could get this blonde plexi reissue head for 1600.

What do you think?

The best amp in this thread is that 67 Superbass in the link, which was maintained by a VH fanatic. I want that one.

However, I think that you'd be happier with the DSL 50 + 4-12 cab, which will cover a lot of ground. The white 97 Plexi reissue, just like the other black ones, will supply you with one big bubbly clean plexi tone, that breaks up when the volume is super loud. I love early Marshalls, and most plexis and clones, but the fact is...they sound like big woody sounding clean amps, until the volume is crushing.

After owning a lot of Marshalls, I've come to the conclusion that 50 watt versions with a lot of gain options seem to be the most useful for a musician.
I've begun to use my Jubilee 50W head a lot, since I can sculp a lot of Marshall flavors out of it at a reasonable volume level. The DSL 50 does the same thing basically. As much as I like vintage Marshalls, they just seem so unbearably loud that they can only be used for one purpose.....cranking in a rehearsal room.

Most important - purchase an amp that is useable at gigs, barroom levels are generally performed at lower volume levels than at reheasal rooms.

OR the bartender will cut power and you will not be back again at that gig.
