Padded gig bags, bubble wrap, and double boxing will be your friend.

Slip the manager of your local GC a bottle of Jack and ask him for a few original boxes and packaging. They usually just throw them in the dumpster anyway.

youre not wrong though, i used to work at a gc 18 years ago or so, and they totally trash the boxes so your advice was on point. but for brother hurricane... the time has passed lol
