I'm not sure what to get now

I'm buying another halfstack this fall and I'm really looking for the best kickass modern amp. I've been hearing so much about the Quickrod(Splawn) but recently have been thinking it sounds a bit thin. Then you have the Bogner XTC 101B which sounds massive with a lot of bottom. Then theres Soldano SLO, Diezel Herbert and a couple others.
I play Classic Rock to Classic Metal. I love the sound of Lynch, Eddie, Schenker. Bands like Priest, Scorpions, etc.
Yeah, I'm an old fart. Any suggestions and advice?
Chris.

Re: I'm not sure what to get now

Bogner is my favorite hard rock/metal amp. You can get anything from smooth high gain neck pickup lead to classic metal rhythm stuff to pretty good crunch type stuff too. And the Bogners have the best clean IMO out of those. Soldanos are too trebly for me. Never tried a Diezel, but I just love the Bogner XC. The Shiva is great too, but IDK if that will do your metal better than the XC.

Re: I'm not sure what to get now

I say Bogner Ecstasy only because it does everything you can possibly do in one TUBE amp. Literally, you get everything from Plexi tones to Metal sounds.

HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR 30th ANNIVERSARY MARSHALL? I have one and I think they are amazing. However, it's like the XTC in some ways, esp the plexi-ish tones. Would you keep both? Run them together.

The Shiva has a much more gorgeous clean.

Since you have the 30th, I would suggest the Soldano or Diezel for running a 2 amp setup. Actually, I would prefer the Diezel tone a bit more. I am also a huge fan of the VHT Deliverance for classic tones. If you just want a metal version of the 30th, on a budget, the VHT UL is cool.

I like the Ann. a lot its the LM version with 5881's. I find the lead channel weak on that amp. Too thin sounding. The rest is alright but I find it isn't built very tuff. The little push buttons break very easily. I rarely run 2 amp setups instead I just grab an amp that will be best suited for the gig or what I have to play. I like ease of use also in an amp. I'm really leaning towards the Bogner these days instead of the Splawn. Decisions, decisions:smokin:

Re: I'm not sure what to get now

hmmmmmm yeah I love my 30th, or should I say lovED until I played the XTC Classic recently.

That amp has 3 GREAT channels. Never played an amp that had ALL 3 work for me.

Frankly, if I had one, I would make CH2 my lead channel and Ch 3 my Plexi Channel, bc Ch 3 with the gain high seems too much at times (hey, TOO MUCH can be a good thing!)

There are alot of us old farts around here. This one recently ordered a Splawn Competition. Hell, if Iommi, Nugent, Richards, Lemmy, etc. can still play heavy music pushing 60 then I have a few years left in me to do the same!

BTW, what makes you say the Splawns sound thin? Just curious. They're basically hot-rodded Plexi, JCM800 and super hot-rodded JCM800 tones.

Re: I'm not sure what to get now

I haven't played one in person yet but I've been carefully listening to the sound clips on the Splawn and other sites including Dirty Craigs live clips and also Estradas live Van Halen clips. Its seems to be a little thin on top compared to the Bogner clips I've been hearing. All the Splawn clips have that same high end sort of high fi sound. Its hard to explain. Alone they seem to sound huge but when in a band mix, they have that predominant top end that cuts thru.

I really want to like this amp since it seems to be all the rave lately but I'm just torn between these 2 amps. Maybe its my old half deaf ears just acting up on me:smack:

Re: I'm not sure what to get now

try a ganz benz el diablo 100, it is amazing, has the looks of a modern amp and all the tech to go with it. The eq is active and makes a huge difference in tone with the slightest tweak. ive had to play with mine a bit but i have my wanted tone now. plus the led's inside just make it pretty
