Grinning Ear to Ear (Splawn Content)

Re: Grinning Ear to Ear (Splawn Content)

Awome Matt, I'm glad to hear that you're so happy with it. Life is too short not to have what we love. In the grand scheme of things, it's not a lot of $$. It's not even the required down payment on the Corvette.

It looks awsome, and I bet the sound is just as good. Enjoy in good health and play it loud as often as you can.

Those are some kind words, bro. Thanks... and I will.

Congratulations, Matt.

Now you need a bigger place to house that beast!

Re: Grinning Ear to Ear (Splawn Content)

Great amp dude! You have great gear! Now get a MXR 10 band eq and make that beast even better!

Re: Grinning Ear to Ear (Splawn Content)

Hi Richie, the OD is always on is my understanding. When the light's off, it is in OD1, when it's on it is in OD2. Two flavors of overdrive.

The only way to get sparkly cleans is to turn the gain waaay down.

I would say that if a clean channel is important, then the Quickrod is more your cup of tea. The Quickrod has a half power switch - 100W/50W.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for that Matt - my bad about the OD, I meant OD1!!:smack: It sounds like a killer amp, but I need a useable clean channel, so I think your right in saying the Quickrod would be for me.

Hey, Matt,

Another question - How's the boost function on the Splawn? Is it just extra gain or a big jump in volume?

Hi Rocker. Let me check it out tonight. I know there is indeed a good amount of volume boost (it is adjustable with it's own knob - relative to master volume). As for the gain, I can't remember - so I'll check it out later.

Welcome to the club!!!

The solo/boost function on mine has a seperate volume control, so it is a volume boost.

The pic above is from the ebay auction, I need to borrow my sister's camera and get a better pic.

Re: Grinning Ear to Ear (Splawn Content)

As mentioned above, the solo boost is a seperate master volume for soloing; not a gain boost.

Re: Grinning Ear to Ear (Splawn Content)

Thanks a bloody lot.

You just had to tell me about a new kind of amp.. then make me go on Youtube.. and get a WHOOLE new level of GAS, didn't you?

...

Cool amp bro, I want clips!

Or.. maybe not... that would just make me GAS harder..

Re: Grinning Ear to Ear (Splawn Content)

Did I mention that I'm loving this amp?

Practiced again tonight - low volume - and finally have it TWEAKED to sound good at low volume. I think these high-gain amps have a tendency to sound a bit on the fizzy side at low volumes. But, I think I've stumbled onto a combination of things that, at least to me, sounds great. I don't hear that fizz no more at real low volume.

I'll admit to having a little trouble adjusting at first. It is a very different experience to what I was accustomed to having played the Line 6 for 5 years now. The Line 6 sounds great at low volume IMO. It has a certain compression and sustain (once tweaked - which took me quite some time to finally work out) that makes low-volume practice almost effortless. Definitely a great product all around and especially for bedroom jamming, and frankly it's probably tough for a big tube amp to compete at baby-sleeping-next-door volumes. Plus, the Splawn will not hide your mistakes - I definitely will be trying to clean up my playing.

But, I think I found a way past the big amp at low volume conundrum and I'm STOKED!!! This was HUGE for me.

As I play it more, I'm thinking that one area this really excels is in clarity. So, you've got the drive dimed, you play - say a minor 7th - and you can hear all the notes - it's not mud? So, you wanna crank some Panama which has some of those kinds of chords in it. Whelp, guess what? You hear all the notes - no problem - 3rd gear OD2 even. Another example is another tune which I find myself playing lots - it's right down the 3rd gear alley - In my Dreams - Dokken. There's a part in there where there are some diminished things going on (for lack of better description). It can be mud under high gain, but with this amp there's none.

Anyway, it works for me.
