Re: Grinning Ear to Ear (Splawn Content)
Did I mention that I'm loving this amp?
Practiced again tonight - low volume - and finally have it TWEAKED to sound good at low volume. I think these high-gain amps have a tendency to sound a bit on the fizzy side at low volumes. But, I think I've stumbled onto a combination of things that, at least to me, sounds great. I don't hear that fizz no more at real low volume.
I'll admit to having a little trouble adjusting at first. It is a very different experience to what I was accustomed to having played the Line 6 for 5 years now. The Line 6 sounds great at low volume IMO. It has a certain compression and sustain (once tweaked - which took me quite some time to finally work out) that makes low-volume practice almost effortless. Definitely a great product all around and especially for bedroom jamming, and frankly it's probably tough for a big tube amp to compete at baby-sleeping-next-door volumes. Plus, the Splawn will not hide your mistakes - I definitely will be trying to clean up my playing.
But, I think I found a way past the big amp at low volume conundrum and I'm STOKED!!! This was HUGE for me.
As I play it more, I'm thinking that one area this really excels is in clarity. So, you've got the drive dimed, you play - say a minor 7th - and you can hear all the notes - it's not mud? So, you wanna crank some Panama which has some of those kinds of chords in it. Whelp, guess what? You hear all the notes - no problem - 3rd gear OD2 even. Another example is another tune which I find myself playing lots - it's right down the 3rd gear alley - In my Dreams - Dokken. There's a part in there where there are some diminished things going on (for lack of better description). It can be mud under high gain, but with this amp there's none.
Anyway, it works for me.
