Im NOT wasted, but I cant find my way home

First, I LOVE that song!!
Second, Am I an oddity? Im trying desparately to latch on to one of my guitars as my main and really work on learning and working with the nuances of the guitar. But its A) hard to choose, and B) I cant seem to find consistancy

Example: My Trad pro is great, I love it. But last few times Ive played it, Ive not been happy with the tones. So, I parked her and been playing my explorer. Today, I got out the LP and started playing and ended up throwing down some of the most musical and toneful stuff Ive ever done. It was just all there.
Im sure that most of it is in my head and I was prolly just inspired today, but does anyone else suffer with this? I really want to latch onto this guitar and have it be my #1. Perhaps its like a regular relationship and I have to play her thru the good times and bad? I just cant figure why it sounded muddy and unpleasant last time I played and so righteous today

Thanks for listening..

See my thread in the off topic room about changing taste in guitars LOL! I know what you mean. some days I pick up a guitar that I normally love and I just can't connect on that day. Gotta play something else. My Carvin has definitely been my go to guitar lately.

Sounds like a classic case of TMG Syndrome. The cure is simple but not easy.

Too Many Guitars. Thin the herd down to 2-3 and watch the disease disapear.

Re: Im NOT wasted, but I cant find my way home

I also love that song. Cool.

If you wanna pick a number 1, think about it logically. What kind of music do you play most? What kind of music do you play best? What guitar is traditionally used for that kind of music, and what guitar do you feel works best for that?

I found that as cliche as it is, I like the blues and bluesy rock. Also, I dig indie rock. In both cases, the clear sound of a strat, the feel when I play it, and the tone of the strat legends made me consider the fact that I may be a strat guy. I just needed to find the right strat.

Force yourself to use only the LP for at least a week. Pin down exactly what you dont like. If you can, fix those problems. If you can't, find yourself another LP that rings out the way you need it to. It sounds like you just need to find the "perfect" LP for you. It could be as simple as messing more with setup, string brand/gauge, and pickups.

Part of it bro.. Trying to thin down but nothing is moving.

Re: Im NOT wasted, but I cant find my way home

See, thats because you are trying to sell them. They move alot easier when you give them away. What you should do is have a contest or something. How about the first 3 people who post in this thread win a free guitar. It would make for wonderful forum PR on your part, which is an added bonus you probably never thought of.

Re: Im NOT wasted, but I cant find my way home

Plus side is you have a bunch of guitars to choose from. The bad part is you got a bunch of guitars to choose from. :eek5: :cool2:

Hey! Thats a heckuva idea!!

lol.. yeah, if my car wasnt ragged out and now broken down, (water pump went out today) and if I didnt owe a grand to the power company and if 3 of my daughters didnt need braces and if my wife didnt have $100 thousand plus in student loan bills, and if I didnt need another back surgery, I maybe wouldnt need to actually sell anything and I could take up your suggestion.. :cool2:
I do know a couple of folks in worse shape than myself that I would like to give one to, or raffle one off to help a charity.. But, I gotta take care of my fam first.
Life was better when I had my second job.. !%!@#$!@! economy..

No words of advice from me, but here's a cover of the song while you're pondering on what to do. :)

LOL! You definitely have enough "evidence" to back that statement up! :friday:

Re: Im NOT wasted, but I cant find my way home

No matter how much you love a #1- you always will look for alternate tone here and there, sometimes you just get different inspiration from other instruments- I tend to play different music on a strat vs. a Flying V, ya know?

Bottom line, if you can afford it, keep a few guitars that do all the sounds you need (like say a strat, tele, and les paul or whatever), and stop imposing a 1 guitar sanction on yourself otherwise the cycle of buying new stuff will never stop.

And trying to make a guitar a #1 is like trying to force yourself to love someone you do not. It does not work, and ends up badly. :D

I have 30 guitars now. I have no intention of selling any of them, and I do have my favorites, but I do really play them all. Not every day, but I do play them all.

Only works if they're the right 2-3 guitars. I've added a couple guitars to my harem in the last year or so but eliminated TMGS by finding a guitar that's my go-to instrument for pretty much everything. If you can't settle on one day in and day out, you likely haven't found the right one.

Re: Im NOT wasted, but I cant find my way home

Everyone goes through that bro, the trick is to thin the herd but still keep a few good and different enough guitars.

I am more or less decided on what to keep and what to let go (if I can that is) and interestingly enough no two guitars are too much alike (apart from them all being superstrats that is :9:)

Re: Im NOT wasted, but I cant find my way home

Thanks for the input everyone!
Dont get me wrong, I will keep as many as I can.. haha Im hoping to be able to cover all the tonal bases. LP, Tele, Strat, bass, Floyd axe.

If the situation gets more dire, then Ill have to move thru those too. After I got married and had my first two children, I pawned the one guitar I had at that time and couldnt get it back and went without for 11 years.. So, my family comes first..

Choosing some of the categories is easy.
Tele, I only have one . Squier vintage modified
Strats: I have only one . Japanese Squier ( I do have another squier strat but it A) has a bucker in the bridge and B) isnt worth anything to sell.
Accoustic I have only one
Bass: Id keep my Epi Tbird Pro

The problem is the LPs and superstrats.. I have a few that are unique and would be very difficult or impossible to replace, so I have to chose carefully..

Also, I understand I cant force a number 1. Good analogy JeffB.. haha So, isnt quite like that. Not like I went and bought a brand doo doo axe and am forcing it to be the one.. I actually love the LP. It really is an issue of too many I love, so hard to choose.. Thats also making it hard to sell em. I dont have any "filler" axes now.. Ive looked at every one and have thought, if I could only keep one, Id be happy with any one of them..

Keeper, the only real 2 alike are the Washburn Mg130s. But hey, I need a blue and a black one.. haha Ill prolly sell one.. Just cant decide which.. do I keep the NOS one cuz its in better shape and has the quilt top, or sell it since its in better shape ?

Im loosing sleep over this.. Sad...

I..

...Don't forget the other one- SG. SG is to Les Paul as Tele is to Strat.

That is not suffering, my friend! That is what making music is all about! It will never be 100% predictable.
