This is gonna be packed with bogus answers and this is why...

To really know the difference you'd have to have experience running BOTH 6L6's and KT66's in the same amp and very few if any people here have done that...

What you are going to get are answers comparing 6L6s' say for example in a Twin Reverb and KT-66's in a JTM-45 clone and thats comparing more of one amp to another...

Re: I'm reading all over the place about KT-66 vs. 6L6 so what's your take

I've run the new sensor KT66 tubes in my Edana and they are basically a 6L6 with thicker and larger glass tubes. Compared to the other KT66 tubes I've used, it sounded kind of wrong. Midrange wasn't as present. Seemed to want to compress a bit when cranked instead of distorting. I didn't like them really.

There's my 'bogus answer' for ya.

I've run the GT KT-66HP, Shuagang KT-66 and the Gold Lion Reissue KT-66's in my Dr. Z Route 66. Liked all of them with the Gold Lion's being my favorite. For KT-66 tubes, the Z site warns against using the Tung Sol's in their amp because the metal base plate will short out the amp.

Sorry, can't comment on 6L6 tubes. Never used them.

Re: I'm reading all over the place about KT-66 vs. 6L6 so what's your take

i have tried several different brands including original GEC KT-66 tubes in several different amps.

All of the copies do not sound like the original GEC's, which are thick and colored with tone.

I have tried GEC = KT-66 into several Fender amps, biased of course... Those tubes sounded great, but have too much current draw for Fender amps.

My Bluesbreaker (Original) and Edana are stocked with GEC KT-66 tubes.

I gave one set to Scott_F (Since returned) and Jeremy for their review and opinions...
